General Information:

The Moorhead Speech Team hopes you will join us in January for a fun, competitive, and collaborative tournament! Our goal is to provide an excellent experience and remind us all why we love this activity.

 


 

Important Dates:

  • Registration Deadline: Monday, February 3rd by 5:00 PM

  • Drop Deadline: Changes to your entry can be made until Thursday, February 6th by 5:00 PM. After this time, entry fees will be frozen for any drops.

 


 

Schedule for Saturday, January 27th:

  • 7:15-8:00 AM: Team Registration at Welcome Table

  • 8:15 AM: Draw Meeting in the Media Center

  • 8:30 AM: Judges Meeting

  • 8:45 AM: Discussion Round 1

  • 9:00 AM: Round 1

  • 10:15 AM: Discussion Round 2

  • 10:30 AM: Round 2

  • 11:45 AM: Discussion Round 3

  • 12:00 PM: Round 3

  • 2:00 PM: Discussion Final Round

  • 2:15 PM: Final Rounds

  • 3:15 PM: Extemp Musical Theater Final Round (while waiting for awards)

  • ASAP: Awards in the Auditorium

 


 

Categories & Double Entering:

  • All NSDA and MSHSL events will be offered.

  • The discussion tasks will be released during the rounds.

  • To accommodate double-entering discussants, discussion rounds will begin 15 minutes before the start of each round.

  • Speakers may double- and triple-enter at their own risk. However, you may not triple-enter in any draw category.

 


 

Judging Requirements:

  • Teams must bring 1 judge for every 6 entries.

  • If any judging slots are not covered, a $100 fee will be charged.

  • Teams must provide judges for each division they are competing in.

  • $8.00 (Novice and Varsity)

  • $16.00 (Duo)

NIETOC Bid Tournament:

This tournament is an official bid site for the National Individual Event Tournament of Champions (NIETOC). Students competing in the following events may earn a bid for the NIETOC tournament.

  • Varsity Drama

  • Duo

  • Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Humorous Interpretation

  • Informative Speaking

  • Original Oratory

  • Prose (counts as a Drama bid)

  • Program Oral Interpretation

If there are enough entries in any of these events, we may offer Merit and Consolation finals to award additional bids. For more information, please visit the official NIETOC website.

 


 

MSHSL Categories:

  • Extemporaneous Reading (Prose): Students will draw from stories 1-13. No stories may be repeated in rounds or finals.

  • Extemporaneous Reading (Poetry): Poetry selections from "Saving Red".

  • Storytelling: Varsity students will draw from ALL stories. Novice speakers will draw from 1-10. No stories may be repeated in rounds or finals.

  • Discussion: Area I and II of the Outline.
