DUDL Tournament #2
General information This is a High School tournament in Colorado. View manager contact information
You are cordially invited to participate in DUDL Tournament #2 at Sturm Hall (2000 E Asbury Avenue, Denver, CO 80210) at the University of Denver on December 14th, 2024.
***This is not the Sturm College of Law building but the Sturm Hall building right across the open area****
All schools that are planning to attend must pre-register through speechwire.com no later than 5pm on Friday, December 6th, 2024. You will be allowed to make drops, add entries, and make name changes until then. If you are making a significant number of changes, or if you need to add/drop entries past that date, please email me at nategraziano@urbandebate.org.
Events: We are offering Varsity and Novice Policy Debate, Student Congress, Mixed Speech, Impromptu, Slam Poetry, and Interpretation. Elimination rounds will be determined by the size of the pool registered and on need to determine results. For reference, we typically try to avoid clearing students to elimination rounds if more than 50% of the total registered student count for that event would be eligible to clear. There may also be concurrent “runoffs” or “tiebreaker” rounds.
Speech: There will be 2 "waves" per "round" - Wave A includes Student Congress and Interpretation. Wave B includes Mixed Speech, Impromptu, and Slam Poetry. Students may choose up to one Wave A and one Wave B event.
Policy is divided into Novice and Varsity. Elimination rounds will be determined by the size of the pool registered and on need to determine results. For reference, we typically try to avoid clearing students to elimination rounds if more than 50% of the total registered student count for that event would be eligible to clear. There may also be concurrent “runoffs” or “tiebreaker” debates.
The resolution for the 2024-2025 season is "Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly strengthen its protection of domestic intellectual property rights in copyrights, patents, and/or trademarks."
Varsity: There are no file nor argument restrictions in the varsity division.
Novice: For the first novice tournament, they used the Atlanta UDL Beginner Packet that includes the Democracy 1AC and negative responses. For this tournament and beyond, novices are now allowed to use the Atlanta UDL Advanced Packet that has the same 1AC but more affirmative and negative options. Please email me if you have questions about the file restrictions in the novice policy division.
Student Congress: Please email legislation to nategraziano@urbandebate.org if you are interested in having an authorship on the docket this tournament. Docket submissions will close on Friday the 8th and will be released on Monday the 11th.
Congress rounds will be docket-locked with 3 pieces of legislation that may only be able to be debated in that round (for 9 pieces total.) This allows more bills to be debated over the course of the day while also pushing the students to prioritize the bills that they have prepared speeches on. This also allows for each round to “restart” and may result in different “Presiding Officers” for each different session.
Judging: Please bring at least 1 judge per 5 entries that you are registering (1 policy team is 1 entry.) This helps ensure the tournament can run smoothly and on time. Every effort will be made to prioritize volunteer judging, but coaches may be asked to step in and judge depending on need.
