Hello Coaches,

You are cordially invited to the Canterbury Middle School Speech Tournament!

We are limiting teams to 50 entries overall and the total size of the tournament to 200 entries.

Entries are due by Wednesday December 3rd at noon.  Only name changes and drops will be accepted. All registration will be done on Speechwire.com.  Please text last minute drops to coach Kevin Torwelle ASAP at 260.446.6792

Entry limits: 7 per event for a total of 55 entries per team. No student may enter more than 2 events.

Doubling: These specific combinations will not be available due to scheduling conflicts:

DEBATE + EXTEMP
DEBATE + BROADCAST
BROADCAST + EXTEMP

All others double at their own risk. Double-entered students are responsible for getting to both events during rounds. While judges will be made aware of double entered students on their ballots, students should still inform their judges that they are double entered.

Judges: Please bring one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof (6 entries = 2 judges).  Extra judges are always welcome.

All events will have three rounds, except debate, which will have 4.

All events will follow IHSFA Middle School Event Rules

Discussion: The questions for discussion are below:

Topic: Health

For each of the following questions, consider:

What is the nature of the problem? How should various actors (e.g. government, private organization, individuals) be involved?

Round 1: How can schools better support students’ mental health, and what role should students play in advocating for these resources? Do schools have effective systems in place to support the mental health of students?
Round 2: What are some effective ways to promote healthy eating habits among teens, especially in a fast-food culture? Do school lunches contribute to healthy choices?
Round 3: In what ways does social media impact teens' self-esteem and body image, and how can they navigate these pressures more effectively?

Schedule:

7:30 - 8:15 am:   Registration

8:30 am: Judges' meeting

9:00 am: Debate round 1, Extemp and Broadcasting Prep

9:30 am: Round 1 for all other events

~12:30 pm: Awards in auditorium

Food: Food will be available to purchase in our cafeteria throughout the day. Pizza will be available around 10:45 am. In the past, we have been able to avoid charging entry fees by selling consessions, so please support our concession stand to offset tournament expenses!

We look forward to seeing you in Fort Wayne on December 2nd!
