This is a Middle/High School tournament in Panama City, Florida.

You are cordially invited to Northwest Florida Civics & Debate Initiative Tournament #6, to be held Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Merritt Brown Middle School, 5044 Merritt Brown Way, Panama City, FL 32404. This tournament will be live and in person.

The NWFCDI Tournament #6 offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. All schools are welcome to compete in this tournament.

There will be three rounds of competition in all events. Tournament check-in for Extemp Speaking is 8:00 a.m. CST.  Tournament check-in for all other events is between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. CST.  Extemp prep begins at 8:30 a.m. CST.  Round 1 for all events begins at 9:00 a.m. CST. 

Judges should check in at 8:00 a.m. CST.  There will be a short judge training at approximately 8:15 a.m.  

We hope to finish awards by 3 p.m. but please be flexible regarding the end time of the event.

REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 3:00pm.

Please plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your event start time.  This means no later than 8:00 a.m. for extempers and no later than 8:30 a.m. for all other speakers/debaters for all other events to check-in. If your students are competing in Extemp Debate, prep will begin at 8:30 a.m..

EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Middle School Champion Award in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate.

No Double Entry.  If a coach submits the same student for two events, that student will be automatically disqualified for both events.

Observers are allowed, but must be registered.

TOPICS:

NOTE: Students will debate BOTH sides of the resolution.

Lincoln Douglas Debate: We are using the March/April 2024 NSDA topic - Resolved: The primary objective of the United States criminal justice system ought to be rehabilitation.

Public Forum Debate: We are using the March 2024 NSDA topic - Resolved: In the United States, collegiate student-athletes should be classified as employees of their educational institution.

Extemporaneous Speaking Topic Areas: International Affairs; U.S. Current Events; Economics

Impromptu Topic Areas: Quotes from Famous Military Leaders; Quotes from Famous Sitcoms; Quotes from the Scottish Enlightenment

CONGRESS LEGISLATION: Submit proposed legislation in either NSDA or NCFL format (either is fine) to ­­­­­­FCDI@fldoe.org, no later than noon Wednesday, March 6, 2024.
 
JUDGES:  We will need your judges in order to run the tournament.

The judge ratio for this tournament is 1 judge for every two debate entries; 1 judge for every 5 speech/interp/congress entries.

Please bring parents, teachers, former students, community members, etc.!

Adults and coaches may judge any division. Qualified varsity with at least 75 NSDA points on record may judge the middle school and novice divisions. Judges need to be trained. They may take the NSDA judge training course if they did not attend any judge training. It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system.

LUNCH: Meals will be provided for all students, coaches, and judges.

CONCESSIONS: Concessions (pizza, snacks, drinks, etc.) will be available for purchase with cash only.

NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGES PERMITTED.

COACHES: Coaches must be available for the duration of the tournament.

FEES: FCDI member schools pay no fees. Non-FCDI schools pay $4.00/student.
