PLYMOUTH SPEECH TOURNAMENT INVITATION

Plymouth Winter Wonderland Speech Tournament

January 13, 2024

#1 Big Red Drive

Plymouth, IN 46563

Greetings from Plymouth High School!

Coaches, we would like to invite you and your team to the Winter Wonderland tournament at Plymouth High School on January 13th, 2024 in the hopes that we will be in the midst of nice weather during the week and weekend of our tournament.

Dual Nature of the 21st!

We will be holding this tournament in conjunction with the Northeast Indiana District Congress tournament. We ask that any schools planning to attend this tournament have all judges in attendance for an 8:00am judges’ meeting to allow us to set up judges for the Northeast District Congress in time for chamber organization and then round one of the  Winter Wonderland Speech tournament will begin at 9:00am. This later start is to ease the morning travel burden for those arriving from the central time zone. Please be aware that NSDA rules mandate that all judges for the NSDA Congress tournament must hail from schools not competing in the actual Northeast NSDA tournament.

This early arrival will allow our Congress to organize and begin on time as well as allow for a longer team and individual warm-up time for the speech teams from all schools (since Congress is 1 event with 2 divisions - Senate and House & Speech will have 16 events with 1 division = Varsity ONLY).  It will also allow a little more time for organization as Extemp draw is scheduled to begin at 8:30.

Our Northeast District chair, Jeff Stutzman (jstutzman@concord.k12.in.us), will be sending Northeast Indiana coaches any remaining details related to the Congress. If you have any questions, please send those to him at the email listed.

GENERAL INFORMATION

As I mentioned previously, this is a VARSITY tournament. We will only be offering a varsity division open to any student regardless of experience.

  • We will offer a team total of 40 entries for sweepstakes and a B-team total of up to 20 entries for non-sweepstakes with a cap of 5 entries in any varsity category per team (A or B).

  • You may triple any amount of students AT THEIR OWN RISK. Check the schedule list in speechwire and make good choices in who you double and triple.

    • However, NO TRIPLING or DOUBLING in Discussion

    • NO TRIPLING or DOUBLING in BOTH Extemps.

      • For example: You MAY enter a student in USX, OO, & Radio

      • But you you MAY NOT enter a student in USX, IX & OO

  • The B-team feature and triple entry feature are designed to assist as you prepare for ISSDA and NSDA tournaments where students may be doing different events.

  • The varsity division will be on an 8 point scale with 1st receiving 8 points, 2nd receiving 7 points…down to 6th receiving 3 points.

  • We will be having an Honor Final for any events with 12 or more entries. The top 8 speakers in every category will be recognized with the top 6 finalists receiving ribbons as well as 7th and 8th place (the top two speakers in the honor final).

  • The top 8 teams will be recognized in a Team Sweepstake Competition.

  • The top 3 speakers will be recognized in a Individual Sweepstake Competition.

Event Details:

  • Drama, Humor, POI, Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Informative, and Declamation will follow ISSDA event rules as posted.

  • Other events will also follow ISSDA rules as posted with some points of emphasis and minor adjustments.

    • Duo, OP Duo, and Improv Duo doublers must maintain the same partner if choosing to enter multiple Duo events.

      • Improv Duo will count towards the individual sweepstakes competition but WILL NOT count for team sweepstakes.

      • Extemp speakers will draw for rounds 1 and 3.

      • The first draw will be used for rounds 1 and 2. The second draw will be used for rounds 3 and any Final / Honor Final.

    • Impromptu - Students will be using the 7 minute flex prep with a randomly selected order for the three preliminary rounds consisting of a word, a quote, or a current event topic. The final round will repeat one of the preliminary categories a second time with a new topic.

    • Improve Duo-

    • Discussion - We will release 4 Discussion Artifacts on Monday evening prior to the tournament with Driving Questions revealed by the judges during each round at the tournament.

    • Broadcasting -

      • Round 1 = 2 minute on-the-spot released with 2 minutes of prep at the tournament.

      • Round 2 = Students will have 30 minutes to prepare a 2 minute editorial on a topic given the day of the tournament.

      • Round 3 = 5 minute news program including 45 to 60 seconds worth of music copy (your choice) and 45 to 60 seconds worth of commercial copy. News for the tournament should come from the week prior to the day of the tournament. The subject of the commercial will be any type of fitness related product / equipment.

      • Final = 7 minute news / editorial program combining the material from rounds 2 and 3. This combination may be organized as the broadcaster wishes.

Judge Details

  • We will use 1 judge for every 5 entries plus a fraction based on the entry total.  If a school has 6 entries they will be expected to provide 2 judges. If you do not have enough judges to cover your entry PLEASE remove the appropriate number slots until you have 1 judge for every 5 entries.

  • For teams entering B teams, please use the total of BOTH teams but enter ALL judges on your A team entry. So, if a team enters a full team of 40 on an A team and a full team of 20 on a B team they would want to list 12 judges on their A team.

  • We will be using on-line balloting for the tournament. Coaches should register judges along with their email addresses and have an electronic device to use for completing ballots. While phones can work, it is recommended to use laptops, ipads, or their equivalent. Judges will be asked to write constructive critiques with a reason for rank along with returning scores for each speaker in their section.

Food Details

We will have food available at the tournament for competitors and judges. We will also have a judge lounge available for your judges. There will be a location to eat aside from the cafeteria that may be a little more relaxed and quieter. We cannot necessarily accomodate all possible dietary restrictions, but we will do our best to see what we can do and continue to live up to our past food service tradition of our larger tournaments. Please remain on campus and partake of what we have to offer.

  • NO DOOR DASH…PERIOD!

    • Individual disqualification if a student is caught ordering food to our campus.

    • Team disqualification is when a judge or coach is caught ordering food to our campus.

      • Please respect the need for concessions to cover the costs of the tournament.

      • Also not allowing exits and entrances to be opened throughout the day will improve the safety of our tournament.

Awards

We will be offering ribbons to the top 8 speakers in all varsity events (the 6 Finalists and top two Honor Finalists), honor finalist ribbons for 9th through 12th place in those events that qualify for an Honor Final.

We will also be awarding team trophies to the top 8 teams at the tournament based on their A team entry. We will award the top three individual speakers with medals.

End of the Day Schedule

If all goes well, we hope to have the speech portion of the tournament completed by 3:30 pm and awards finished by 4:30pm. If we can make adjustments to accelerate the tournament, we will do what we can. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me. The two best ways are by email to my school account or by cell phone. Both of these contact possibilities are listed in the header at the top of the invitation.

Note

Plymouth will not be accepting a team award at this tournament.
