Dear 3A Coaches,

Your school is cordially invited to attend the 2023/2024 CHSAA 3A State Tournament!!!

The CHSAA 3A State Tournament will be held at Niwot High School in Boulder CO. The dates of the two day, in-person meet are Friday, February 2nd and Saturday, February 3rd..

Please register your school on Speechwire this week. You can add/change competitor names through Friday, January 26.

EVENTS OFFERED

As it states in the CHSAA Handbook, schools may enter a maximum of four students or four teams per event (including Congress).

A WAVE- Congress, Combined Extemp, CST, Value Debate, OO, Drama, Humor, Poetry

B WAVE- PF, LD, Impromptu, Duo, POI, Informative Speaking

DOUBLE ENTRY OPTIONS

Double entry restrictions indicate that students may enter a maximum of two events – one Wave A event and one Wave B event. Students in Extemporaneous Speaking, One-on-One Value Debate, Public Forum Debate and Lincoln Douglas Debate may double enter, but may not double enter in another debate event or Extemporaneous Speaking (i.e. a student could enter Drama and PF, but could not enter Extemp and PF). Students in Congressional Debate may double enter in any wave B event, including PF and LD.

SWEEPSTAKES

Similar to NSDA Nationals, the 3A States Tournament will probably include sweepstakes awards  (a team award that adds up students placements in finals rounds) for Speech, Debate, and Overall. We will award trophies to the first and second place schools. Additionally we will award eight ‘Schools of Excellence’ certificates in both Speech and in Debate. We will award points for 1st-6th place, in addition all students who break to semis/out rounds will earn team points.

REGISTRATION

We will, once again, be using Speechwire for registration.  The link will be activated on December 4th and we will send out an email once registration is open. In the meantime, please note that all competitors, coaches, and judges will need an active Speechwire account. If you are not familiar with Speechwire, this link will walk you through setting up student accounts and judge accounts: https://www.speechwire.com/p-video-resources.php.

We will be using the February NSDA topic for PF

Resolved: The United States federal government should ban single-use plastics.

JUDGES

Teams will be expected to bring judges to this meet. All coaches must communicate their school’s judge’s email addresses to CHSAA no later than January 26. The Arbiter system will be used for payment and for background checking judges for the CHSAA State Tournaments. Once approved, Arbiter certification lasts for 55 years.

Each school should bring one judge for every five event entries and every two debate entries. Additional judges are always appreciated and help the tournament to run on time. Coaches and assistant coaches are expected to be available for the duration of the tournament and may be asked to judge if needed. Please make sure that your judges have met the requirements listed below. If you are struggling to find judges to cover your team’s entries or have questions about judge training, please contact Greg or Diane. Judges will be paid $15 per round.

The judge requirements for this tournament are:

  • Must have judged at least one invitational tournament

  • Graduated competitors have met this requirement

  • Must pass judge certification test: CLICK HERE to access the test (link is also available on the CHSAA website)

We hope to see you at Niwot at the 3A State Tournament.  We plan to update the Speechwire site as new information becomes available. Coaches will be able to access the results from the website at the end of the tournament. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
