 Dear Coaches,

The Mullen Speech and Debate Team in partnership with the D’Evelyn Speech and Debate Team  invites you to attend and participate in The 62nd Colorado’s Oldest Tournament. Registration can be found on Speechwire.com.

 

Events offered: 

INTERPS: Drama, Duo, Humor, Poetry, POI,  EPR 

SPEECH: Impromptu, International Extemp, US Extemp, Informative, Original Oratory

DEBATE: Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, CX, JV CX (if we have at least 4 teams)

What’s EPR?

EPR is Extemporaneous Programmed Reading. This is a draw category. Competitors will have 1 hour to cut down the piece to 5 minutes and present it. Round 1: Poetry, Round 2: Prose, Round 3: Humor, and Round 4: Drama.

 

What’s Extemp Debate? 

Extemporaneous Debate is a supplemental event at the National Speech & DebateTournament. Students compete in a one-on-one format with limited prep time to prepare for the topic they are to debate.  Each round, students will be texted a unique resolution.  They are given thirty minutes to prepare for the round.The use of evidence is permitted, but not a focal point due to the limited time available.  Students may talk to each other and their coaches, and they may use the internet during the prep time.The times for this debate are:  2 min Pro Constructive, 1 min CX, 2 min Opp Constructive, 1 min CX, 1 min mandatory prep time, 2 min Pro Rebuttal, 2 min Opp Rebuttal, 1 min mandatory prep time, 2 min Pro Rebuttal, 2 min Opp Rebuttal (16 total minutes).  Rounds will be waved.  

 

JV CX:  If we have at least 4 teams, we will run a JV CX division.  The normal limitations will apply:  no kritiks, no counterplans, and cases limitations to the four areas defined by NFHS.

 

Entry Limitations: 

Four entries per school are allowed in each event. We will accommodate additional entries if judges are provided for entries and we have room. Thank you for helping us run a timely tournament for all!

 

Debate Topics: February NSDA resolutions will be used for Public Forum and Lincoln Douglas Debates.

 

Internet: Guest Wifi is available through Mullen High School. This tournament will run using online ballots, so remind your judges and your students that WiFi will be available, and they should plan on bringing a device capable of making an internet connection.  We will use the NSDA rules for internet use. Please remind your competitors that WiFi is not guaranteed and backup physical copies are suggested.

 

Rules: We will abide by CHSAA rules and rankings for speech and debate events.

*We never want financial difficulties to be a barrier to entry. Please contact the tournament directors to discuss cost.

 

Doubling: All competitors may enter up to two non-debate events, but Exempers will risk losing prep time. Debaters may double enter in extemp debate. 

 

Judging and Registration: All teams will be expected to provide judges that cover ALL their entries! 1 speech judge covers 6 entries, 1 debate judge covers 2 entries. The tournament would like to have a single wave schedule, so please provide adequate coverage.
