Greetings from Plymouth High School!

 

Coaches, we would like to invite you and your team to the Plymouth Fall Speech Tournament at Plymouth High School on November 11th, 2023. We will host competition in 14 events [Broadcasting, Declamation, Discussion, Drama, Duo, Humor, Impromptu, Informative, Extemporaneous Speaking (combined IX & USX), Original Oratory, Original Performance, Poetry, Programed Oral Interpretation, and Prose]. 

 

Registration Deadline: Please submit your entry  no later than Monday, November 6th, 2023 by 5:00pm (EST). 

 

General Information Regarding the Speech Tournament

The Plymouth Fall Speech Tournament will offer both Varsity & Novice divisions in all the previous stated 14 events. 

 

  • VARSITY  =  Students regardless of experience, who have competed in previous tournaments are  welcome to enter this “open” division.

  • NOVICE  = This division is reserved for any competitor in their first year of high school speech and debate. If the student in question has completed prior to this season in speech and/or debate, s/he/they must be entered in the varsity division.

 

 

Team Sweepstakes: We will offer a team total of 50 entries for sweepstakes with a cap of 5 entries in any varsity event and 5 entries in any novice event per team. 

Varsity will be 8 points for first, 7 points for 2nd, and so on.  Novice will be scored with 6 points for first, 5 points for second, and so on.

 

 

Schedule 

7:15 - 7:55 Teams should are arriving, checking in, and warming up 

8:00 to 8:15 Judges' meeting in the Cafeteria

8:15 All Extempers Draw Rd. 1 - location to be announced.

8:30 Ballots Released 

8:45 to 9:45 Round 1 all events

9:45 Varsity only extempers Draw Rd. 2 (Novice will use Rd 1 topic for Rd 2)

10:15 to 11:15 Round 2 all events

11:15 All extempers Draw for Rd. 3 

11:45 to 12:45 Round 3 all events

1:15   FINALS in all events begin  (Note: Novice Extemp is to use their Rd. 3/Second 

draw topic.  Varsity Extemp may choose any of their three prelim round topics.)

3:00pm Awards in the Auditorium



 

Double Entries: 

  1. Students may double in any of the following events; Broadcasting, Declamation, Drama, Duo, Humor, Impromptu, Informative, Extemporaneous Speaking (combined IX & USX), Original Oratory, Original Performance, Poetry, Programed Oral Interpretation, and Prose. 

  2. Students entered in Discussion MAY NOT double. 

  3. Duo and OP Duo doublers must maintain the same partner if choosing to enter both Duo events.

 

 

 

Event Details:

  • Varsity - Impromptu, Drama, Humor, POI, Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Informative, and Declamation will follow ISSDA event rules as posted.  Novice of these events will be allowed to use scripts, but follow all other ISSDA rules.  Novice Impromptu may use notes they create during their flex prep.

  • Other events will also follow ISSDA rules as posted but with the following  adjustments:

    • Extemp - 

      • USX and IX will be combined with topics from both sectors in each round.

      • Novice Extempers draw for Rd 1 and 3. Varsity Extempers draw for Rd 1, 2, & 3.

      • Novice Extempers use their Rd 1 topic again for Rd 2, and use their Rd 3 topic for finals.

      • Varsity Extempers draw before Rd 1, 2, and 3, and choose any of these topics for finals.

    • Discussion - We will release 4 Discussion Artifacts on Monday evening prior to the tournament with Driving Questions revealed by the judges during each round at the tournament.

    • Broadcasting - 

      • Rounds 1, 2, 3, and the final will all consist of a 5 minute news program that is to include approx 20-30 seconds of a music intro, 20-30 seconds of a music outro, 45-60 seconds of a commercial for a Thanksgiving Appropriate Food Product, and the remaining 3+ minutes for news from recent local, state, national, and/or international news.

 

 

Judge Details:

We will use 1 judge for every 5 entries plus a fraction based on the entry total on Thursday at 8:00 pm. If a school has 6 entries on Thursday evening at 8:00, they will be expected to provide 2 judges.

 

We will be using on-line balloting through SpeechWire for the tournament. Coaches should register judges along with their email addresses and have an electronic device to use for completing ballots. While phones can work, it is recommended to use laptops, notebooks, or their equivalent. Judges will be asked to write constructive critiques with a reason for rank along with returning scores for each speaker in their section through SpeechWire.

 

Food Details:

We will have food available at the tournament for competitors and judges. We will also have a judge lounge available for your judges. Please remain on campus and partake of what we have to offer.

 

Awards:

We will be offering ribbons to the top 6 speakers in all novice and all varsity events. We will also be awarding team sweepstakes trophies to the top 5 teams at the tournament.  (Plymouth will not be accepting a team award at this tournament.)

 

Final Notes:

Eric Schaefer will be at a wedding this weekend so Katie Anders will be running the tournament that day and Charlotte Tyree will be running the building.  Please feel free to contact any of us with any questions, BUT on the morning of the tournament, please contact Katie Anders with any concerns.
