Dear Speech Coach:

 

Thornwood High School will be hosting its annual invitational speech tournament on Saturday, December 16th, 2023. We welcome you to participate. If you intend to enter a team, please read the following information carefully and submit your entry as soon as possible. This year, The twist is that we will be having 4 coaches finals. Teams are allowed to submit one coach in each event and it will be judged by students that are 2 years out of the program. We are offering DUO, POETRY/PROSE, INTERP(DI/HI) AND PUBLIC ADDRESS(DEC). It's time for the coaches to have some fun!

7:00 am  Registration in Main Office

 

8:00 am  Round A 

 

                 Round 1: ALL EVENTS EXCEPT RS & ES (DDA, DI, HDA, HI, IMP, INFO, OD, OC, OO, PO, PR, & SOS) 

 

8:45 am  EXTEMP & RADIO PREP

 

9:30 am  Round B (RS double judged)

                 Round 2: ALL EVENTS (DDA, DI, ES, HDA, HI, IMP, INFO, OD, OC, OO, PO, PR, RS, & SOS)

 

 

11:00 am  Round C (ES double judged)

                 Round 3: ALL EVENTS (DDA, DI, ES, HDA, HI, IMP, INFO, OD, OC, OO, PO, PR, RS, & SOS)

 

1:00 pm  EXTEMP & RADIO Final Round PREP

 

1:30 pm  Final Rounds - All Events Including Coaches Finals 

 

3:30 pm  Awards - Cafeteria

 

EVENTS:  All fourteen (14) IHSA Individual Events. 4 Additional Coaches Events 

 

 

JUDGING ASSIGNMENTS PER ENTRY: Each team will need to furnish the following number of judges based on individual entries:

1 – 6 Entries:         1 judge

7 – 12 Entries:        2 judges

13 – 18 Entries:       3 judges

19 – 24 Entries:       4 judges

25 – 30 Entries:       5 judges

31 – 36 Entries:       6 judges

37 – 42 Entries:       7 judges

43 – 48 Entries:       8 judges 

 

JUDGING:  Each team will be responsible for the number of judges based on their original entry number. Teams that are missing judges will be charged $50.00 per judge. This fee will need to be paid before your team will be allowed to compete. Each team will furnish judges based on their original entry number.  Contestant drops on tournament day will not decrease the number of judging assignments required on tournament day. Please ensure that the number of judges you are expected to bring is accurate. No school will be required to bring more than eight (8) judges unless they are bringing a B team. 

 

JUDGING REQUIREMENTS:  We believe our participants are entitled to the best judges of the events. Therefore, we ask that your judges have reached at least their sophomore year of college.  Also, to assure proper coverage, please advise all hired judges that they must stay the entire day, regardless of how many contestants, if any from your team qualifies for the Final Round.

 

*Please supply your judges with stopwatches for Impromptu Speaking AND Radio Speaking.

PAYMENT:  

0-14 entries:  $175.

15-28 entries: $200.

29-42 entries: $250.

43+ entries:   $300.

AWARDS: Individual medals will be awarded to the top six contestants in each event and ribbons to all final round qualifiers.  Preliminary round scoring will determine team placement for awards.

 

TIME: No contestants will be disqualified for time.  However, all times will be taken into consideration in ranking.  In the case of radio, those not making the time limits will be ranked last in the round.

 

 

RULES: All rules for the tournament will follow the 2022-23 IHSA Rule Book.  Please allow, however, contestants participating in two events to alter their speaking order in one of their events.  

 

PROSE & POETRY:  Contestants should have one 8-minute program selection according to IHSA rules.

 

RADIO:   Radio speakers will have one 45-minute prep period. 

That script will be used for both preliminary rounds.  Contestants will be double-judged in Round II (B) in order to get three preliminary round ranks.  Final round qualifiers will prep a second time.  Those qualifying for a final round will use a final round radio script.

 

 

 

EXTEMP: Extemp speakers will have one 30-minute prep period.  That speech will be used for both preliminary rounds.  Contestants will be double-judged in Round III (C) in order to get three preliminary round ranks.  Final round qualifiers will prep a second time.  Please submit 10 extemp and 10 impromptu questions for use with your entry.

 

 

LUNCH & SNACKS: We will be serving lunch items, such as pizza, nachos, and snacks – candy, doughnuts, pop, chips, water – throughout the day.

 

 

ENTRY FORM: We must receive you entry on Speechwire no later than 6pm on Wednesday December 14th, 2023.
