You are cordially invited to Brown-Barge Middle School's 

Reindeer Rhetoric Tournament

 (Northwest Florida Civics & Debate Initiative Tournament #3), to be held Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Brown Barge Middle School, 201 Hancock Lane, Pensacola FL 32503. This tournament will be live and in person.

The NWFCDI Tournament #3 offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. All schools are welcome to compete in this tournament.

There will be three rounds of competition in all events. Tournament check-in for Extemp Speaking and Extemp Debate is 8:00 a.m. CST.  Tournament check-in for all other events is between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. CST.  Extemp prep begins at 8:30 a.m. CST.  Round 1 for all events begins at 9:00 a.m. CST. 

Judges should check in at 8:00 a.m. CST.  There will be a short judge training at approximately 8:15 a.m.  

We hope to finish awards by 3 p.m. but please be flexible regarding the end time of the event.

REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 3:00pm.

Please plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your event start time.  This means no later than 8:00 a.m. for extempers and no later than 8:30 a.m. for all other speakers/debaters for all other events to check-in. If your students are competing in Extemp Debate or Extemp Speaking, prep will begin at 8:30 a.m..

EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Middle School Champion Award in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate.

No Double Entry.  If a coach submits the same student for two events, that student will be automatically disqualified for both events.

Observers are allowed, but must be registered.

TOPICS:

NOTE: Students will debate BOTH sides of the resolution.

Lincoln Douglas Debate: We are using the November/December 2023 NSDA topic - Resolved: Resolved: The United States ought to prohibit the extraction of fossil fuels from federal public lands and waters.

Public Forum Debate: We are using the November/December 2023 NSDA topic - Resolved: The United States federal government should forgive all federal student loan debt.

Extemporaneous Speaking Topic Areas: Artificial Intelligence, US Education, International Politics

Impromptu Topic Areas: Quotes from colonial America to reconstruction, quotes from reconstruction America to present, movie quotes. 

JUDGES:  We will need your judges in order to run the tournament.

The judge ratio for this tournament is 1 judge for every two debate entries; 1 judge for every 5 speech/interp/congress entries.

Please bring parents, teachers, former students, community members, etc.!

Adults and coaches may judge any division. Qualified varsity with at least 75 NSDA points on record may judge the middle school and novice divisions. Judges need to be trained. They may take the NSDA judge training course if they did not attend any judge training. It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system.

LUNCH: Meals will be provided for all students, coaches, and judges.

CONCESSIONS: Concessions (pizza, snacks, drinks, etc.) will be available for purchase with cash only.

NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGES PERMITTED.

COACHES: Coaches must be available for the duration of the tournament.

FEES: FCDI member schools pay no fees. Non-FCDI schools pay $4.00/student.
