FCDI Northwest #2 Spooktacular at Thomas Sims MS
General information This is a High School tournament in Florida. View manager contact information This is a Middle/High School tournament in Pace, Florida. You are cordially invited to the Sims Spooktacular! Northwest Florida Civics & Debate Initiative Tournament #2, to be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Thomas Sims Middle School, 5500 Education Dr. Pace, Florida, 32571. This tournament will be live and in person. To celebrate Halloween there will be holiday-themed games, candy, and treats for judges and students. Halloween-themed "Spooktacular" tournament t-shirts will be for sale for $25.00. Coaches are encouraged to come in costume and competitors are encouraged to spice up their competition outfits with a hat, cape, or mask! However, please note that these items are not to be worn during competition and performance. Impromptu topics will be Halloween-themed and Prepared Prompt Speaking with Halloween-themed topics has been added as an event. The NWFCDI Tournament #2 at Thomas Sims Middle School offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. All schools are welcome to compete in this tournament. There will be three rounds of competition in all events. Tournament check-in for Extemp Speaking and Extemp Debate is 8:00 a.m. CST. Tournament check-in for all other events is between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. CST. Extemp prep begins at 8:30 a.m. CST. Round 1 for all events begins at 9:00 a.m. CST. Judges should check in at 8:00 a.m. CST. There will be a short judge training at approximately 8:15 a.m. We hope to finish awards by 3 p.m. but please be flexible regarding the end time of the event. The full schedule can be found in the Schedule tab on the Speechwire registration page for the tournament. REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 3:00pm. Please plan to arrive at Thomas Sims Middle School, 30 minutes prior to your event start time. This means no later than 8:00 for extempers and no later than 8:30 for all other speakers/debaters for all other events to check-in. If your students are competing in Extemp Debate or Extemp Speaking, prep will begin at 8:30AM. EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Middle School Champion Award in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate. No Double Entry. If a coach submits the same student for two events, that student will be automatically disqualified for both events.

Observers are allowed, but must be registered. TOPICS: -Lincoln Douglas Debate: Resolved: The United States ought to guarantee the right to housing. -Public Forum Debate: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its military presence in the Arctic. NOTE: Students will debate BOTH sides of the resolution. IMPROMPTU TOPIC AREAS: Halloween, Song Lyrics, Superheroes EXTEMP TOPIC AREAS: Round 1: International Affairs Round 2: Domestic US Issues Round 3: Mass and social media PREPARED PROMPT SPEAKING: "We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones." -Stephen King We are using NSDA rules for Prepared Prompt Speaking and speeches should not exceed 5:30 long. CONGRESSIONAL LEGISLATION: Please submit Congress legislation to taylorfcdi@gmail.com no later than noon, Wednesday, October 11. JUDGES: We will need your judges in order to run the tournament. The judge ratio for this tournament is 1 judge for every two debate entries; 1 judge for every 5 speech/interp/congress entries. Please bring parents, teachers, former students, community members, etc.! A judge training video and additional judging resources can be found HERE Adults and coaches may judge any division. Qualified varsity with at least 75 NSDA points on record may judge the middle school and novice divisions. Judges need to be trained. They may take the NSDA judge training course if they did not attend any judge training. It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system. LUNCH: Meals will be provided for all students, coaches, and judges. CONCESSIONS: Concessions (pizza, snacks, drinks, etc.) will be available for purchase with cash only. NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGES PERMITTED. COACHES: Coaches must be available for the duration of the tournament. FEES: FCDI member schools pay no fees. Non-FCDI schools pay $4.00/student.
