EXTEMP DEBATE ROUND FINALS TOPIC: Resolved: The use of antibiotics in livestock should be banned for any meat to be sold and consumed.

 

You are cordially invited to the Florida Civics & Debate Initiative 2024 State Championship, to be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Lake Brantley High School, 991 Sand Lake Rd, Altamonte Springs, FL, 32714. 

The FCDI State Championship at Lake Brantley High School offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. ONLY students who have competed in an FCDI tournament during the 23-24 school year are welcome to compete in this tournament.

Please read all tournament information carefully as this tournament operates differently than our regional tournaments.

There will be three rounds of preliminary competition in all events except Congressional Debate, where there will be two 2-hour sessions and one final session. There will be one elimination round in events with 18 entries or less. There will be two elimination rounds in events with more than 18 entries.  The tournament will begin at 8:30am Eastern time. We hope to finish awards by 7PM, but please be flexible regarding the end time of the event.

The full schedule can be found in the Schedule tab on the Speechwire registration page for the tournament. We reserve the right to modify the published schedule.The schedule may change as we track entries for different events. 

REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE Monday, April 1, 2024 at 6:00pm. Register your team as soon as you are able since there will likely be a waitlist. 

Please plan to arrive at Lake Brantley High School 991 Sand Lake Rd, Altamonte Springs, FL, 32714, no later than 8:00am the morning of the tournament to check in.

EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Champion Awards in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate.

No Double Entry.  If a coach submits the same student for two events, that student will be automatically disqualified for both events.

Observers are allowed, but must be registered.

 

DEBATE TOPICS:

NOTE: Students will debate BOTH sides of the resolution. 

Lincoln Douglas Debate: We are using the March/April NSDA topic - Resolved: The primary objective of the United States criminal justice system ought to be rehabilitation.

Public Forum Debate: We are using April NSDA topic - Resolved: The United Nations should abolish permanent membership on its Security Council

Policy Debate: We are using the 2023-2024 NSDA topic- Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase fiscal redistribution in the United States by adopting a federal jobs guarantee, expanding social security, and/or providing a basic income. 

Extemporaneous Debate Topic Areas: Artificial Intelligence, Federalism, Education, US Fiscal Policy, Agriculture

Extemporaneous Speaking: Florida News, International Affairs, Current Events in the US, US Economics, Science and Technology

Impromptu Speaking Topic Areas: One word, if I could be ___ for a day I would..., if I had __ superpower I would..., Underdogs, Quotes from famous Floridians (born in Florida). 

CONGRESS LEGISLATION: Submit proposed legislation in either NSDA or NCFL format (either is fine) to ­­­­­­FCDI@fldoe.org no later than noon Wednesday, March 27. The FCDI State Championship Legislation Packet will be published no later than Wednesday, April 10.

JUDGES:  We will need your judges in order to run the tournament. All schools must supply judges. 

The judge ratio for this tournament is 1 judge for every two debate entries; 1 judge for every 5 speech/interp/congress entries.

Please bring parents, teachers, former students, etc.!

Adults and coaches may judge any division. 

FOOD

Concessions (snacks and drinks) will be available for purchase.

Food is allowed on campus, students and parents are encouraged to pack and bring food. There will be a food delivery drop off, and there are restaurants and grocery stores nearby.

FEES: FCDI member schools pay no fees. Non-FCDI schools pay $4.00/student.
