Judge Philosophies for LD-NPDA-IPDA

Welcome to the 2023 Paul Winters & Pat Kennedy Memorial Tournament,

We are excited to host your students in what we believe will be one of the best invitationals we have hosted over the last 19 years here at Pacific. As you prepare to visit our city and campus, we have prepared a number of links to help you throughout the weekend that we will try to keep pinned to the top of this document. Please read through the announcements below and reach out if you have any questions.

Registration and Parking

This year registration will be in Benerd School of Education (Education) which can be located on the campus map provided on the tournament doc (a phrase you will hear a lot). The best place to park, for registration, is Parking Lot 27, 4, or 2. These lots are most centrally located on campus. However, you may wish to park closer to the northern side of campus near the DeRosa University Center (DUC), Wendell Phillips Center (WPC), or Weber and if so Lots 6, 20, 24, and behind the Greek houses are ideal. You will have to pay for parking on Friday, but can purchase day passes in any lot using the park mobile app. Beyond that, parking should be free on weekends.

Payment

Invoices will be finalized this evening and you can access your team’s invoice online. If you would like to pay via credit card, the link has been updated on the google doc & will be on speechwire. You can also pay via check or cash (we like this because of no fees) and if you have questions about your invoice please contact Steve at his email. He has a lot he is going through but will work with you and your school to get payment.

Digital Tournament and Accessing Ballots

If you have not done so already PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEAAASSSEEE enter emails for your judges and students. You can do this by going to your roster in your speechwire account and adding emails to each student on your roster. This will help your students get email updates and alerts. You can also subscribe to the tournament by clicking the subscribe button available for the tournament on speechwire. This will also help students get alerts during the tournament, access their digital pairings and schematics, see changes to tournament, etc! I will be working to send activation emails/reminders throughout the next two days but the more you can do to enter your students and judges information, the better it will be for each of us.

Your judges will access their ballots on live.speechwire.com. If they have not used their email to access ballots on speechwire previously, they will need to use the forgot password link, enter the email address affiliated with their account that was input during registration, and then set up a password. Instructions and links to this are available on the tournament google doc.

Internet Access

We have a dedicated network for the tournament this year and we hope this should alleviate some of the access concerns of the past. That information is available at the top of the tournament google document and here is the information as well:

SSID: PHS&CS_Debate

Password: Gotigers2023

Locations: Anderson, Buck, Classroom, DUC, Weber, & WPC

We recommend you restart your laptop when you come to campus as this has consistently proven an effective method for accessing our WiFi network. If you choose to use the guest network instead of the dedicated WiFi network, and are using Apple devices, please open your web browser to "pacific.edu" to force the internet splash page so you can use it.

Lunch and Amenities

We have ordered 425 lunch tickets that are valid at the DeRosa University Center in order to try and provide lunch for the following folks each day:

Friday- Lincoln Douglas competitors and judges

Saturday- Parliamentary debate competitors and judges along

Sunday- IE & IPDA competitors and judges

We will likely have extra tickets but will try to give every possible combination for you and your students in your registration folder. We pay for every ticket so PLEASE do not lose them and if we need extra we can ask for them potentially over the weekend but I cannot promise this.

On Saturday and Sunday morning there will be coffee and refreshments from 7:30AM to 10:30AM in Benerd’s lounge. If you are interested in trying food from Stockton (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) then check the google document with a list of restaurants in the area! If you are staying in Lodi I can provide recommendations for there as well!

Collapsing Events, Judging Commitments, and Strikes

We will be collapsing events per the invitation where necessary. We appreciate you understanding our need to do so but will recognize the top novices in collapsed divisions. Furthermore, we will try to honor students entered in NPDA & IPDA but we will not have information about the potential necessity of dropping students from IPDA until late in the day Saturday. In terms of judging commitments, we hope you saw our email yesterday but we have gone through to recategorize your judges who had been entered multiple times and if you have questions please reach out. We will be tight across some events and will be doing our best to provide strikes where possible as well in LD and NPDA. In order to provide strikes, however, we do need you to email us your judge philosophies. I will be trying to enter them as we go along so you have them too but please email as you can.
