Colleagues:

As our forensics landscape continues to evolve, our community should be seeking out new ways for teams to participate in our activity. It is with this spirit, we introduce the 3 x 3 Tournament Series - a set of virtual synchronous I.E. tournaments featuring all AFA/NFA events with a hyphenated schedule! Some unique guidelines:

  • Each student may only enter 3 events total.

  • Each school is limited to 3 slots per event.

  • There will only be one pattern of IEs with two prelim rounds and a final (if necessary) to cut down on the time spent in front of your computer screen.

  • Low entry fees designed to just cover the cost of hosting and judges.

  • Tournaments will be hosted via Yaatly and Speechwire.

Fee Structure

$25 School Fee (primarily to cover the cost of judges, Yaatly, Speechwire)

$25 per student (regardless of number of events entered)

$15 per uncovered student (1 judge covers 3 students)*

*This fee can be negotiated for student-run programs. Just email me.

Checks payable to: Hofstra University - and then mailed to:

Trent Webb, Director of Forensics

Dept. of Writing Studies and Rhetoric

121 Hofstra University

1000 Hempstead Turnpike

Hempstead, NY 11549

*There is a credit/debit card option available. Again, just email me.

3. All schools must provide 1 qualified judge for every 3 students.

4. Each student may enter up to 3 events.

5. Each school may enter up to 3 slots per event.

Tournament Specifics

1. The tournaments shall take place virtually via Yaatly (for postings and performances) and Speechwire (for e-ballots). Judges must rank and turn in ballots promptly.

2. Extemp Draw is built into each round. Both Extemp and Impromptu topics will be released via Speechwire. A Yaatly room will be designated for Extemp Draw. There will also be an Impromptu Waiting Room. We’re asking that after students perform, they proceed to the waiting to retrieve the next competitor in their room.

3. The tournament series shall take place on the following dates:

  • 3 x 3 The Debut: September 30

  • 3 x 3 Winter Blast: January 20

  • 3 x 3 Last Stop: March 2

4. For Impromptu Speaking, the 3 x 3 mandates that each judge give students 15 seconds to read over the prompts before beginning time.

5. No physical awards are given at 3 x 3 tournaments.

6. The top 3 IE speakers and top 3 schools will be recognized at awards. Sweepstakes will be calculated as follows:

  • 6th/7th place - 1 point

  • 5th place - 2 points

  • 4th place - 3 points

  • 3rd place - 4 points

  • 2nd place - 5 points

  • 1st place - 6 points

7. The AFA scale will be used for ranking and rating (16 - 25 points). Judges should award 1st through 5th in prelims; and 1st through 6th in finals (or 7th if applicable).
