Hello, Upstate Eight Coaches!

 

The Glenbard South Speech Team is excited to welcome you to the Upstate Eight Conference Championship to be held at Glenbard South High School (23W200 Butterfield Rd, Glen Ellyn) on Saturday, January 28, 2023. We will be using digital ballots, so please inform your students and judges and coaches to bring their fully charged devices to access their round schematics and ballots.

 

ENTRIES: Capped at 2 per category. Students cannot be triple-entered. Please do your best to finalize your entries as soon as possible. You can text me drops/adds from your bus as you travel to the tournament (630-209-6184). I will leave registration open so that you can go on Speechwire and make those drops/adds on your own from the bus.

 

JUDGES: All schools are required to bring three judges. (If you have more available, let me know!) Please note that your three judges must be paid by your school. The UEC pays for 15 judges hired by the host school. Your judges MUST be “clean," meaning your judges must not have connections to your students as they will most likely be judging your own students due to the size of the tournament. I am politely asking that any Speech alums you bring to judge are at least two Speech seasons removed from high school competition. I will have copies of the rules book for your judges, along with samples of quality critiques.

 

CURRENT TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE:

7:00 a.m.–Registration

7:30 a.m.–Judges Meeting

8:00 a.m.–Round 1 A (Double-Judged): DDA, HI, IMP, OC, OD, OO, PR

8:30 a.m.—RS Prep

8:45 a.m.—ES Prep

9:15 a.m.—Round 1B (Double-Judged): DI, ES, HDA, INF, PO, RS, SOS

10:30 a.m.—RS Prep

10:45 a.m.—ES Prep

11:15 a.m.—Round 2 (Single-Judged): All Events

12:45 p.m.—RS Prep for Finals

1:00 p.m.—ES Prep for Finals

1:30 p.m.—Finals

3:00 p.m.—Awards

This is the schedule we have used for the past few years, but since we will be using digital ballots, we can start awards at 3:00 instead of 3:30.  

 

PREP: Radio and Extemp will prep for both prelims and again for finals. Also, if you or an assistant coach would like to run the prep room, let me know! I do not have a lot of knowledge in this area.

 

CONCESSIONS will be provided, as well as continental breakfast and lunch for judges and coaches.

 

BUSSES: Please have your busses drop you off at the main entrance off of Butterfield Rd. Busses can park in the back areas of the parking lot.

 

TEAM SPACES: Teams will have tables assigned in our commons.  Commons are located on the east side of the building on the main floor. When you enter, registration and the tab room will be to your right down the hallway, in front of the tower stairway. Food for judges and coaches will be served in the teacher’s lounge, which is to the left of the Commons on the East side of the building. Signs will be posted throughout the building.
