General Information: The Moorhead Speech Team hopes you will join us in January for a fun, competitive, collaborative, and exciting two-day tournament. Our goal is to provide you with an excellent experience and in a way that reminds us all why we love this activity.

Important Dates: 

Registration Deadline: Monday, January 23rd at 5PM

Drop Deadline: Changes can be made to your entry until January 26th at 5PM. Entry fees will be frozen for drops after this time.

Tournament: Saturday, January 28th 

 

 

CHANGE OF PLANS! In an effort to keep our NIETOC numbers strong, we will be keeping our novices and varsity divisions merged. Instead of offering a novice tournament on Friday, we ask that the novices join with the varsity in rounds on Saturday. In addition, we will award trophies to the top novice in every category.

 

 

Schedule 

Saturday, January 28th  

7:15-8:00 AM: Team Registration at Welcome Table E Door 22 (Head coaches please check-in)

8:15AM: Draw Meeting in Media Center 

8:30AM: Judges Meeting 

8:45AM: Discussion Round 1

9:00AM: Round 1

10:15AM: Discussion Round 2 

10:30AM: Round 2

11:45AM: Discussion Round 3 

12:00PM: Round 3

2:00PM: Discussion Final Round  

2:15PM: Final Rounds 

3:15PM: Extemp Musical Theater Final Round in Performing Arts Center (while waiting for awards) 

ASAP- Awards in Auditorium

 

Categories & Double Entering: 

  • All NSDA and MSHSL events will be offered.
  • The discussion tasks will be released in round.
  • In order to faciliate double entered discussants, the discussion rounds will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of each round.
  • Speakers may double and triple enter at your own risk. However, you may not triple enter if you are in any draw category.

Judging Requirements: Teams are expected to bring 1 judge for every 6 entries. Judging slots not covered will incur a $100 fee. Teams will be expected to provided judges for each division they are competing in.

NIETOC Bid Tournament: This tournament is officially a bid tournament site for the National Individual Event Tournament of Champions. Students competing in Varsity Drama, Duo, Extemp. Speaking, Humorous, Informative, Original Oratory, Prose (counts as a Drama bid), or Program Oral Interpretation have the ability to earn a bid that will get them one step closer to competing at the NIETOC Tournament in Chanhassen, MN in May 2023. If there are enough entries in any of the NIETOC categories, we may offer a Merit and Consolation final to offer more bids. For more information visit their official website.

 

MSHSL Categories:

  • Extemp. Reading (Prose): Students will draw from stories 1-13. No stories may be repeated in rounds or finals.
  • Extemp. Reading (Poetry): Poetry selections from "Saving Red".
  • Storytelling: Students will draw from stories 1-10.  No stories may be repeated in rounds or finals.
  • Discussion: Area I and II of the Outline.
