NSDA Coaches and Squads,
The St. Joseph Central High School Speech and Debate Program would like to formally invite you to the 2023 Central Cronkite Classic on January 20th & 21st at Central High School. Our squad has voted to honor a great communicator, journalist, and St. Joseph native, Walter Cronkite. We will also honor Central Alumna Alexis Peterson, who saved our program from being canceled during the pandemic, by awarding the Alexis Peterson Sweepstakes Trophy. We look forward to hosting both 1st and 2nd Year Novice Students. Lafayette High School will have a varsity competition the same weekend.
Events at the Novice Tournament will include: Lincoln-Douglas Debate Public Forum Debate Policy Debate Student Congress Humorous Interpretation Dramatic Interpretation Duo Interpretation Prose/Poetry Original Oratory Informative Speaking Storytelling Live Radio Speaking Combined Extemporaneous Speaking
Internet access will be available for students in debate, extemp, and congress.
We will guarantee 2 entries in each event and then all other entries will be waitlisted upon entry. Extra entries will be awarded as available and at the discretion of the host school. Entry fees will be $8.00/entry
The deadline for entries is Wednesday, January 11th @ 3 p.m.

Information and Rules 1) Students may enter in up to two individual events plus debate. Congress contestants may only enter congress plus debate 2) Each school must supply a qualified judge for each day their school competes. 3) Each coach is responsible to see that his or her students get to their rounds on time. 4) Entry fees are $8.00 per event and are due by Wednesday, January 11th, 3 p.m. 5) Awards will be given to finalists in all individual events and student congress. Awards will be given to all debaters breaking to quarterfinals and beyond. Sweepstakes awards will be given for overall sweeps. 6) A hospitality room for coaches, judges, and bus drivers will be provided both days of the tournament with complimentary refreshments served both days. 7) A concession stand will be available for the competitors both days. 8) The tab room will be located in room 126 9) Extemp draw will be located in the Upper Library 10) Sweepstakes points will be earned in the following manner: only the two best entries in each event will earn point for a school in sweeps 11) All CHS building policies will be enforced at all times. Please keep all food and beverages in the cafeteria. 12) Any competitor who violates building policy regarding alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs will be immediately disqualified from the tournament. Debate Events Lincoln-Douglas 1. All NSDA/MSHSAA rules apply 2. Our tournament will use the NSDA 2023 January/February Lincoln-Douglas topic 3. Time limits for Lincoln Douglas debate will be:6-3-7-3-4-6-3 4. Each debater will be allowed 4 minutes of prep time 5. Tie-breakers: Ballots won, Opp wins, Total points, Opp ranks, Opp-Opp wins 6. A debater more than ten minutes late to a round will forfeit unless it is the fault of the tournament 7. Debaters are allowed to use laptops in rounds but must follow MSHSAA guidelines 8. January-February LD TOPIC
Public Forum 1. All NSDA/MSHSAA rules apply 2. Our tournament will use the NSDA 2023 January Public Forum topic 3. PF Debate will be: 4-4-3-4-4-3-3-3-3-2-2 4. Each team will be allowed a total of 4 minutes of prep time 5. Tie-breakers: Ballots won, Opp wins, Total points, Opp ranks, Opp-Opp wins 6. No maverick teams will be allowed to debate 7. A team more than ten minutes late to a round will forfeit unless it is the fault of the tournament 8. January Public Forum Topic
Policy 1. All NSDA/MSHSAA rules apply 2. Our tournament will use the NSDA 2022/23 topic: “Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States” 3. Time limits will be 8-3-5 4.Each team will be allowed a total of 8 minutes of prep time 5. Tie-breakers: Ballots won, Opp wins, Total points, Opp ranks, Opp-Opp wins 6. No one-person teams will be allowed to debate. Team personnel must remain constant throughout the tournament 7. A team more than ten minutes late to a round will forfeit unless it is the fault of the tournament 8. Debaters are allowed to use laptops in rounds and must follow MSHSAA rules
Congressional Debate 1. Our tournament will use the December 2022 NSDA Legislation packet 2. The judges and parliamentarian will rank the students at the end of each session which determines who advances to Super Session 3. Criteria for advancing and placing in Student Congress will be as follows: Advancing to Super Sessions: 1. Cume of judges in sessions one and two 2. Humorous or Dramatic Interpretation Selections must be taken from published literature (play, nobel, short story). NSDA guidelines will apply. Selections should possess literature merit and be appropriate for a high school performance. The performance, including the introduction, must be memorized. Time: 10 min. maximum with a 30-sec grate period. NSDA Rules

Informative Speaking Students deliver a self-written speech on a topic of their choosing. Not more than 150 words may be in the form of a direct quotation. Informative speakers may use visual aids that comply with the NSDA informative speaking rules. All topics must be informative in nature, not persuasive. The speech must be delivered from memory. Time: 10 min. maximum with a 30-sec grace period. NSDA Rules
Original Oratory The persuasive speech must be the original work of the contestant. Not more than 150 words may be in the form of a direct quotation. This speech must be memorized. A student may not repeat an oratory used in previous seasons. Time: 10 min. maximum with a 30-sec grace period. NSDA Rules.
Radio Speaking This event will be performed live. This piece must be the original work of the student, written in the last 24 hours of time of tournament. Contestants will sit with their backs away from the judge. Time: 5 min. maximum with a 30-sec grace period. MSHSAA Rules
Storytelling Selections must come from published material. The memorized introduction may be given in a standing or seated position. The contestant shall narrate the story in a combination of their own words and origin essential phrases, and from a seated position on a chair or stool. Time: 8 min. maximum with a 30-sec grace period. MSHSAA Rules
Prose/Poetry Interpretation Scripts must be used (READ FROM) and taken from a published source of quality literature. Prose selections are not to be more than 50% dialogue. Binders or folders must be used. Note: the student can have poetry and/or prose selections to perform Time: 8 min. maximum with a 30-sec grace period. MSHSAA Rules
Extemporaneous Speaking Drawing of current event topics will be conducted at 5-minute intervals. A total of 30 minutes prep time will be allowed. No consultation with others is allowed during prep time. Time: 7 min. maximum with a 30-sec grace period. NSDA Rules
