“Savannah Showdown” Open Speech and Debate Tournament Invite Dear NSDA Teams and Coaches, The Savannah High School speech and debate team would like to invite you to the “Savannah Showdown” Open Speech and Debate Tournament, December 16-17, 2022. The style of this tournament will be split – I.E’s, Speaking Events, and Congress on Friday and Debate Events on Saturday. We will hold three rounds on Friday, with Top 6 placements awarded from the accumulation of these three rounds’ scores. We will host a brief awards ceremony in the gym to honor these recipients. Saturday we will hold 4 rounds of debate (hidden quarters), semi-finals, and finals. We will hold a brief awards ceremony in the gym to announce semi-final breaking. Additionally, we will host a small ceremony in the cafeteria following sems to congratulate those advancing to the final round. Friday: We will be hosting Congress, Open Extemp, HI, DI, POI, DUO, O.O., and INFO. Prose, Poetry, Storytelling, Live Radio, and Duet Acting will also be offered under MSHSAA rules. NOTE: In an effort to allow Student Congress students a chance to diversify, those entered in Student Congress may also double enter in Radio Speaking if they so choose. We will be placing these event rooms next door to allow for a quick transition between the two. Saturday: We will be hosting Policy Debate, Lincoln Douglas debate, Public Forum Debate. We have made a large community push for judges, but ask that coaches and or a school representative be on standby should the need for a fill-in arise. The deadline for receiving entries on Speechwire.com will be Friday December 10th, 2022 at 3:00PM. We will guarantee 2 entries in each event and then all other entries will be waitlisted upon entry. Mary Beth Rosenauer Kristen Lewis Savannah Speech and Debate Asst. Speech and Debate Competition Information and Rules ● Please do not arrive before 3:00 pm on Friday. Teachers will be helping usher out students as quickly as possible, but we do not release from school until 2:48. There will be nowhere for buses to park until AFTER 3:00 p.m. Thank you for your understanding. ● Each school shall be guaranteed up to two entries in each competitive event offered. Extra entries will be granted on a basis of space availability and order of submitted entries. ● A student may not enter more than one debate event. ● A student may enter up to one debate event and two individual events. ○ Please do not allow students to triple-enter in any other combination than the example given above. ● Trophies will be given to the top six entries in individual events and top eight in debate ● Overall Sweepstakes will be awarded to the top three schools. ● Power Sweeps- As in the glory days of the Northwest region’s Micheal Pittman and Trudy Kinman, we will be offering a power sweeps award based on the average overall point value earned per student per team. ● Campus regulations prohibit smoking inside and outside on school grounds. ● MSHSAA rules of conduct will be enforced. ● WIFI will be made available to all competitors in debate and extemp only. ● Schools are financially responsible for all entry fees as of Friday, December 16th at 3:00 PM. This includes all entries that are dropped. ● Entry fees are $8.00 per entry. ● All entries are due by 3:00 p.m. December 10th, 2022 on Speechwire. ● Tab will be open for viewing throughout the tournament. ● A student may not use the same selection for more than one event or from a previous year. We will be utilizing a modified on-deck system for awards to ensure the flow is quick as possible. DEBATE EVENTS LINCOLN DOUGLAS DEBATE 1. The resolution will be the current NSDA November/December Lincoln-Douglas topic. 3. Time limits for Lincoln Douglas debate will be: 6-3-7-3-4-6-3. 4. Each debater will be allowed a total of 5 minutes of prep time 5. Ties will be broken by looking at win-loss, opposition loss, opposition record, and s. 6. A debater more than ten minutes late to a round will forfeit unless it is the fault of the tournament. 7. Debaters are allowed to use laptops in rounds but must follow MSHSAA guidelines. PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE 1. The resolution will be the current NSDA November/December Public Forum Topic. Time limits for Public Forum debate will be: 4-4-3-4-4-3-3-3-3-2-2. Each team will be allowed a total of 4 minutes of prep time. 3. Sides will be determined by a coin flip at the start of each round. 4. Ties will be broken by looking at win-loss, opposition loss, opposition record, and . 5. No maverick teams will be allowed to debate. Team personnel must remain constant throughout the tournament. 6. A team more than ten minutes late to a round will forfeit unless it is the fault of the tournament. POLICY DEBATE The resolution will be the NSDA/MSHSAA approved topic. 1. Time limits will be 8-3-5. Each team will be allowed a total of 8 minutes of prep time. 2. Ties will be broken by looking at win-loss, speaker points, opposition record of the team they lost to, and total opposition record. 3. No one-person teams will be allowed to debate. Team personnel must remain constant throughout the tournament. 4. A team more than ten minutes late to a round will forfeit, unless it is the fault of the tournament. 5. Debaters are allowed to use laptops in rounds and must follow MSHSAA rules. STUDENT CONGRESS- We will be using the December 2022 NSDA legislation packet. Student Congress may double-enter in Radio Speaking only. INDIVIDUAL & SPEECH EVENTS HUMOROUS OR DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION – Selections must be taken from published literature (play, novel, short story). NSDA guidelines will apply. Selections should possess literary merit and be appropriate for a high school performance. The performance, including introduction, must be memorized. Time: 10 min. maximum DUO INTERPRETATION – Selections must be taken from published works including novels, short stories, plays, or poetry. NSDA guidelines will apply. The performance, including introduction, must be memorized. Time: 10 min. Maximum PROGRAM ORAL INTERPRETATION- Sections must be taken from 2-3 genres and from published literature (i.e., prose, poetry, drama, plays, novels, short stories, etc.). NSDA guidelines apply. Selections should possess literary merit and must be appropriate for a high school performance. The performances should include an introduction and must be memorized. All components must be verbally identified by title and author. Binders or folders must be used. Performances may not exceed 10 minutes. PROSE- Selection shall consist of no more than 8 mins of published literature. Please see MSHSAA Guidelines for further details. POETRY- Selection shall consist of no more than 8 mins of published literature. Please see MSHSAA Guidelines for further details. OPEN EXTEMP: INTERNATIONAL AND U.S. EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING COMBINED - Drawing of current event topics will be conducted at five-minute intervals. A total of 30 minutes of prep time will be allowed. No consultation with others is allowed during prep time. R1- International, R2- U.S., R3-Combined INFORMATIVE SPEAKING- Students deliver a self-written, ten-minute speech on a topic of their choosing. Not more than 150 words may be in the form of a direct quotation. Informative speakers may use visual aids that comply with the NSDA informative speaking rules. All topics must be informative in nature; the goal is to educate, not to advocate. The speech is delivered from memory. Time: 10 minutes maximum. ORIGINAL ORATORY – This persuasive speech must be the original work of the contestant. Not more than 150 words may be in the form of a direct quotation. The speech must be memorized. Time: 10 min. maximum. A student may not repeat an oratory he/she used in any previous year of competition. STORYTELLING – Selections must come from published material. The memorized introduction may be given in a standing or seated position. The contestant shall narrate the story in a combination of his/her own words and original essential phrases, and from a seated position on a chair or stool. Time: 8 min. Maximum DUET ACTING- shall be defined as an acting exercise composed of two students who portray a memorized ten (10) minute cutting from a published work of literature. A student shall portray only one character in a scene. However, he/she may portray more than one character if the cutting consists of more than one scene, or if the scene is written for the actors’ portrayal of multiple characters. Stage makeup, costumes, or properties shall be prohibited with the exception of two (2) chairs and a table. Please see the MSHSAA handbook for further details. RADIO SPEAKING- Students will create a 5-minute live radio-style broadcast using news that is not older than 24 hours. Please see the MSHSAA Handbook on Radio Speaking for more details.
