Fellow Speech Coaches,

David City will be hosting our annual David City Speech Invitational on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Once again we would like to invite your team to our tournament and look forward to your competition.  Entries are due Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, by 3:00 p.m.

We will again have a 2 round format with 2 flights and finals. We are positive our tournament will be one of the highlights of your team’s season.  We are also offering NIETOC bids in respective events.

As in the past, we will have two divisions, junior varsity and varsity. There will be separate team sweepstakes for each division. David City will NOT participate in team sweepstakes. (David City competitors will still compete as individuals.) The junior varsity division is just that, junior varsity. If you want to run your novice in varsity, that is fine. If you have experienced competitors who are struggling, you can enter them in junior varsity. If you have a competitor that is doing two events and want one event in varsity and the other event in junior varsity, we will accommodate.  In preliminary rounds, junior varsity contestants will be competing concurrently with varsity contestants.

In the Varsity Division, the top 6 (and ties) will go to Champ Finals. The next competitors (7-12) will go to Honors finals. The total finalists between Champ and Honors will be 12 (unless there is a tie for 12th). So if for instance, 7 go to Champ Finals, then 5 will go to Honors. In no event will fewer than 6 break Champ finals.

In past years, we have had 5 judge panels in Champ Finals and 3 judge panels in Honors Finals. We cannot guarantee we will be able to accomplish this feat again, but we will try. If not there will be 3 Judge Panels in Champ and 2/3 Judge Panels in Honors.

We will have junior varsity finals for the top 6 JV competitors after prelims. We will likely have 2 Judge Panels in JV Finals.

In the past years, 93 judges were slotted for a Final at the DC Invite. So, please plan ahead and know we need your judges more than your money. This is more judges judging finals than judge finals at one day of State Speech.  I should also note that we want qualified judges.  Please do not bring judges interested only in a paycheck.  Judges should not be more interested in Facebook than the speeches performing for them.

A total of 18 medals in each event (12 varsity and 6 in JV) will be awarded. (Last year, more medals were given in Duet Acting as well).

We have attached a tentative schedule which is subject to change.

8:00—Round 1 Extemp Draw (Extempers DE in Flight A will Draw FIRST)

8:00—General Meeting

8:30—Round 1 Flight A (OID, Duet, Serious, POI)

9:00—Round 1 Extemp

10:00—Round 1 Flight B (Ent, Inf, Pers, Poe, Humorous)

10:30—Round 2 Extemp Draw

11:30—Round 2 Flight A(OID, Duet, Serious, POI, Extemp)

1:00—Round 2 Flight B (Ent, Inf, Pers, Poe, Humorous)

1:30—Finals Extemp Draw

2:30—Finals Flight A (OID, Duet, Serious, POI, Extemp)

3:00—Finals Flight B (Ent, Inf, Pers, Poe, HUM)

ASAP—Awards. Awards will begin immediately at the conclusion of the last final.

Our goal is to have awards concluded around 5:00. We try to move awards along as quickly as possible, keeping in mind we give out 18 medals per event, this can be a challenge.

Fees: Entry fees will be $8.00 per entry (individual or group). We ask that you provide 1 judge per 5 entries (and if you liked two judges in each prelim last year, bring more judges). All uncovered entries will be assessed an additional $11.00 fee. We would rather have your judges than your money.  Communicate with me and we can try to have judges cover some of your entries and get you their contact information.

Please confirm that you are again planning to attend our tournament. You may start submitting entries as early as you wish.  I would be happy to answer any questions.
