The Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League would like to invite you to this one-day, VERY short, VIRTUAL tournament and workshop on Saturday, Oct. 1st from 9:00 AM to 4:15 PM. The tournament will be hosted using Zoom. Noncompeting students are welcome to attend all or any part of the day. GENERAL INFORMATION

ENTRIES & JUDGES: Entries should be received by MONDAY, September 26th by 5:00 PM via Speechwire.com. Each school should provide one qualified judge for every 6 slots entered. If you have students in all four categories, then you should bring one clean judge for each 3 students. If you cannot get a clean judge, please let us know because we may be able to work something out! Each student may only compete in up to 3 events.

If one doesn’t already exist, coaches will need to create a team account on Speechwire.

If you are joining via cellphone, participants may need to download zoom app before the tournament to ensure participation in the workshops.

Clean judges should not have taught nor coached your students in any way. Additionally, clean judges must not have competed in the last 2 years. Please let us know of any other judging conflicts.

Judges must possess a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent or have completed four (4) years of collegiate competition. Judges who cannot judge may be asked to help w/tab, Zoom, & more.

FEES: Fees will be charged accordingly:

Covered entries: FREE

Uncovered entries: $10

MISL Dues: $30 (May be paid at Fall MISL)

ELIGIBILITY: Anyone who is an undergraduate (has not received a BA or a BS degree) can compete. We are attempting to make this a ‘newer’ student tournament. So, while your students do not need to be novices, they should not be seasoned veterans who have mastered the event. However, if you have an interpretation student who hasn’t tried impromptu yet, have them try it here! If you have a second-year student or a varsity member who has never tried a limited prep event, then this may be the time!  (This might include a student who has competed in an event and has not yet made it to a final round.)

AWARDS: Certificates will be e-mailed to the top six persons in each event, and they will be announced at the conclusion of the event via e-mail.

RECORDINGS: MISL members are currently working on generating short recorded informational videos for each event. Videos will be made available to students roughly one week before the event.

EVENT DESCRIPTIONS

IMPROMPTU - Each contestant will receive quotations, editorial cartoons or objects, and they will have seven minutes to divide between preparation and speaking.  It is suggested that the contestant's speaking time be at least three minutes. Judges usually expect an introduction, body, and conclusion.

INFORMATIVE - Each contestant will deliver an original, factual speech to fulfill the general purpose of informing the audience.  Visuals may or may not be used to supplement and/or reinforce the message.  The speech should be delivered from memory.  At this tournament, we will have access to smart stations, so PowerPoint will be an option!!!   Time limit is ten minutes maximum.

PROSE - Each contestant is to prepare and deliver one 8-10 min. selection of prose. (Plays/poetry are not eligible.)  If more than one selection is used, original transitions should be used as needed.  Limited movement is acceptable. The time limit includes introductions.  Manuscripts required.

DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION (DI) This event must use material from the stage, screen or radio.  The performer can represent one or more characters and must use a manuscript.  Maximum time limit – 10 minutes, including an original introduction.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  We look forward to seeing you!
