Please join us at KHS for a great debate!  We are hosting an in-person debate for both novice and varsity members.  KHS will be awarding the top 8 contestants in all categories of competition. 

 

Date: Saturday, October 15th

Registration: 7:45 – 8:15

Round 1 (tentatively) 8:30 Eastern Time

Round 2 (tentatively) 10:15

Lunch (tentatively) 11:45-12:15

Round 3 (tentatively) 12:15

Round 4 (tentatively) 2:00

Awards (tentatively) 3:45

 

The deadline for entries is Oct. 12, 2022 by 5:00 pm Eastern Time.

 

Events/Topics

 

Policy debate – Varsity and Novice – Topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: Artificial Intelligence, biotechnology, or cybersecurity.  Novice case restrictions will apply: Artificial Intelligence: Restrict development and/or use of Lethal Autonomous Weapons (LAWs); Biotechnology: Ban the use of germline genetic engineering in humans; Biotechnology: Substantially increase funding for vaccine research; Cyber: Ban offensive cyber operations.  No Kritiks and no Counterplans allowed.
 

Lincoln-Douglas debate – Varsity and Novice - Topic: Resolved: The United States ought to implement a single-payer universal healthcare system. 

Public Forum debate – Varsity and Novice – Topic: Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its investment in high-speed rail.

World School debate – Varsity only – Prepared topic (teams will debate AFF/NEG for the following and have two impromptu motions): This House believes that the environmental impacts of conventional burial practices cannot be justified. 

Congressional debate – Varsity and Novice – The ISSDA September/October docket will be used for the following legislation: 2, 3, 4, 6.  Varsity will elect presiding officers from within the house with competitors voting for best P.O.  Please email me at jluckey@kokomo.k12.in.us if you have someone willing to PO the novice house.

Big Questions debate – Varsity only – Topic: Resolved: Humans are primarily driven by self-interest.  Students may debate solo or with a partner.

 

Judges:

  • Please bring one judge for every 4 debaters or fraction thereof (3 PF teams=2 judges). Congress=1 judge per 5 entries/fraction.
  • All judges should be ready to judge any event.
  • Varsity debaters with 250 NFL points+ may judge novice (PLEASE make sure to mark them as such on their registration.)
  • We will be using online balloting, so all judges will need to register on Speechwire prior to coming and bring a device.  Laptops or tablets are preferred over smartphones. 

 

Food: We will be offering concessions.  Please do not bring your own food, water, or snacks as our concessions profit will be used to pay for extra judges, ribbons, and the Speechwire platform.  KHS parents and staff will provide a judge’s lounge with breakfast snacks and lunch free of charge.
