Mustang Invitational

Middle School

Speech & Debate Tournament

Coaches & Students,

You are invited to join us for a free Middle School speech and debate tournament on Thursday, October 27th, 2022 at Colorado Academy.  We will be offering three events, Public Forum, Original Composition, and Interpretation of Literature with both novice and varsity divisions. High school students are welcome and encouraged to judge. Dinner will be provided free of charge for all participants and judges.

We hope to run an efficient tournament with two rounds of competition in all varsity divisions and three rounds with abbreviated times for all novice divisions. Varsity divisions will run with typical NSDA rules (10 minute time limits in Speech events and full speech times in Public Forum). While the novice division will have all speech times cut in half (5 minute time limits and 2 minute PF speeches) and allow the use of scripts in speech events. Our goal of doing this is to create a no pressure atmosphere for all students to feel comfortable in their first speech and debate experience.

Competition Events

Public Forum

Utilizing the typical NSDA rules, students will be debating the September/October topic, Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its investment in high-speed rail. All students must have partners and will not be allowed to compete individually in the tournament.

Original Composition

This event category will combine the events Original Oratory, Informative, and original storytelling to compete side by side in the same pool. Students are expected to write an original composition, with or without the use of visuals, and perform it for an audience. Tone of speech is completely up to the student.

Interpretation of Literature

This event category will combine the events, Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp, Dúo Interp, Oral Interp, Poetry, Prose, and Program Oral Interp to compete side by side in the same pool. Students are expected to preform an interpretation of an existing piece of literature. Scripts should be age appropriate and follow the NSDA guidelines for acceptable scripts.
