Welcome to the Debate Broward High School Novice Championships on April 29th at Cypress Bay High School!
 
Remember, Broward Novice Champs is for NOVICE debaters in their first year of high school debate. Veteran debaters with at least 150 NSDA points are welcome to attend and judge.
 
Please follow the instructions on this page to register your entries. Remember, each school may only initially enter FIVE students in all events except Congress, in which you can enter TEN.
 
Registration for NEW ENTRIES will close on Wednesday, April 26th at 4 pm. At that time as many students will be released from the waitlist as judge numbers allow. Changes (drops or name changes) can be made until 7 am on Saturday, April 29th. Any changes after that, please text Justin Weaver: 954.790.8160 the school name, student who is dropping, and her/his event.
 
There is no entry fee for traditional BCPS students to participate. Private and Charter Schools must pay a $25.00 team entry fee that covers as many entries as your team has.
 
Each competitor will be provided with a lunch choice of type of pizza. You must make that selection when registering or your choice will default to "Cheese Pizza".
 
You MUST arrive AND check-in for the tournament between 7:30 am and 8:00 am. If you or your students arrive after 8:00 am you will run the risk of being dropped from the tournament!
 
For PF, the APRIL topic will be used - Resolved: The United States Federal Government should ban the collection of personal data through biometric recognition technology.
 
For LD, the MARCH/APRIL topic will be used - Resolved: The justices of the Supreme Court of the United States ought to be term-limited. (Please note that we are NO LONGER using the Novice "civil disobedience" topic).
 
For Policy Debate, the 2022-23 topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity.
 
Extemp topic areas will be "the U.S. Presidency", "Climate Change", "the U.S. Legal System", "Digital Security", and "the U.S. 2024 Election".
 
Impromptu topic areas will be "Book Quotes", "Social Media", "Routines", "Cooking", and "Champions".
 
Congress legislation will be emailed to coaches and posted here under the "Files for Download" section. The legislation packet designates 3 pieces of legislation for each round of competition.
 
More information will be distributed as the tournament approaches. Please let your mentor know if you have any questions.
