Welcome to the new season! Our first DebateBroward AST of the year will be on Thursday, September 22nd at Fort Lauderdale High School!
Remember, our ASTs are for NOVICE debaters in their first year of high school debate. Veteran debaters with at least 150 NSDA points are welcome to attend and judge.
Please follow the instructions on this page to register your entries. Remember, each school may only initially enter FIVE students in all events except Congress, in which you can enter TEN.
Registration for NEW ENTRIES will close on TUESDAY, September 20th at 4pm. At that time as many students will be released from the waitlist as judge numbers and room space allow. Changes (drops or name changes) can be made until 12pm on September 22nd, the day of the tournament. Any changes after that, please text Justin Weaver: 954.790.8160 the school name, student who is dropping, and their event.
You MUST arrive for the tournament between 1:30pm and 2:15pm. If you arrive after 2:15 you will get caught in Fort Lauderdale's dismissal traffic and could miss/forfeit the first round.
For PF, the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER topic will be used - Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its investment in high-speed rail.
For LD, the NOVICE topic will be used in September and October - Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified. (Please note that we are NOT using the September/October "single-payer universal healthcare" topic).
For Policy Debate, the 2022-23 topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity. In addition, at the ASTs all teams MUST use the Novice Policy Packet. The Novice Policy Packet can be accessed at the NDCA website: http://www.debatecoaches.org/
Extemp topic areas will be "Climate Change" and "Pop Culture", and Impromptu topic areas will be "Change" and "Traditions".
Congress legislation for the fall semester was emailed to all coaches. It is also accessible electronically here under the "Files for Download" section. The fall legislation packet has designations for which bills will be debated in which months, with 4 bills per month. Per usual, chambers might not debate all 4 bills if time does not allow.
More information may be sent out as the tournament approaches. Please let your mentor know if you have any questions.
