Dear Friends,

On behalf of the College of Communication and the Arts of Seton Hall University, the Brownson Speech and Debate Team, and SNAFU, we are delighted to invite you to the Annual Ed Leonard Memorial Speech Swing (with SNAFU) to be held on November 12-13, 2022. The Ed Leonard Memorial will be held on November 12 and SNAFU will be held on November 13. We hope you will join us in person at Seton Hall University to share our gifts of oral expression with friends from near and far.

The Ed Leonard Swing is open to all schools and will feature the 11 AFA-NST events and IPDA Debate.  Additionally, a special IE event, Impromptu Sales, will be offered on Saturday. All points and tabulations will be conducted according to AFA-NST procedures. Two preliminary rounds of individual events will be followed by finals consisting of the top six contestants in each event. We will offer an Individual Speaker Award to the top three individuals who enter in at least four events in two genres of forensics. Sweepstakes awards will be given to the top three schools.

Ed Leonard was an extremely talented young man who began his forensics career at Brookdale Community College and spent the last years of his life at Seton Hall. He truly made an indelible imprint upon the forensics community. Ed was always kind to others and very humble when he accepted his numerous awards. Ed treated others with dignity and respect. Perhaps Seneca the Elder had Ed Leonard in mind when he penned, "An orator is a good man who speaks well". It is our intent to bottle Ed Leonard's "goodness" at his tournament's namesake and we are looking forward to offering you a well organized and high spirited weekend full of quality competition.

Enclosed you will find tournament information and the entry form. Please read the information carefully. Should you have any further questions please contact Catherine Zizik at 862-253-7886, Catherine.Zizik@shu.edu or Sam Ohrenberger-Hopkins at 540-230-3507, Sam.Hopkins@shu.edu. On behalf of the team, coaches, and alumni, we look forward to hosting you!

All the best,
Sam Ohrenberger-Hopkins, Head Coach, ADOF, Tournament Director

Rules:
Seton Hall University and SNAFU will use the current standing event definitions and time limits as published by the American Forensics Association.  We will offer a semi-final round for any event with 40 or more entries competing in both preliminary rounds of competition.

Judges:
One judge covers two IPDA slots or six IE slots.  Judging obligation is based on the initial entry to the tournament.  Due to the size and structure of the tournament, IPDA and IE judges will be in the same pool.  Accommodations will be made if possible.

COVID Protocols:
Students, judges, and guests are encouraged to mask while not performing.  Building signage notes "Masking Welcome."  A limited number of masks will be available at the ballot table along with hand sanitizer.  Seton Hall University policy states that community members are welcome to request others to wear a mask when meeting.  As guests, we consider all tournament attendees part of the university community and ask everyone to be considerate of such requests.

Content/Trigger Warnings:
The use of content/trigger warnings is encouraged in all events by writing on the board when signing in and/or verbally notifying audiences before performances.  We will honor an open-door policy.  Students and audience members are encouraged to step out of performance spaces at any time, no questions asked, if they feel the need to.  Judges who are concerned about triggers can contact Sam Ohrenberger-Hopkins at sam.hopkins@shu.edu or the tab room and accommodations will be made if possible.

Advocacy Table:
For persuasion entries (or any entries!) with handouts, QR codes, petitions, etc. please reach out to Dan O’Connor at daniel.oconnor1@student.shu.edu to be included in the advocacy table at the tournament.  We want your advocacy to reach as many people as possible!  That means folks at the tournament who may not have a chance to see a persuasion round.

$ 12 per uncovered IE slot (judge covers 6 IE slots)
$ 35 per uncovered debate slot (judge covers 2 debate slots)
