SFCFL 4: West Broward High School | January 21, 2023

The SFCFL Speech & Debate world and West Broward High School invites you to the 4th SFCFL tournament on Saturday, January 21, 2023. 

Remember, you must be a paid member of SFCFL to attend this tournament. Additionally, any student who wishes to compete at the Grand Final Tournament in March must attend one complete SFCFL tournament.

EVENTS Public Forum Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Varsity & Novice Congress, Extemporaneous Speaking, Program Oral Interpretation, Original Oratory, Dramatic Performance, Informative Speaking, Declamation, Duo Interpretation, After Dinner Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, World Schools Debate

ENTRY LIMIT: 8 entries in each category. DOUBLE ENTRY IS ALLOWED IN SPEECH EVENTS.

LOCATION: West Broward High School 500 NW 209th Ave, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029

STUDENT ENTRY FEE:   $25.00 per student payable to SFCFL.

JUDGE REQUIREMENTS:      1 judge for every 5 IE (including Congress), and 1 judge for every 2 debaters or fraction thereof, but you cannot mix PFD or LD judges. Please make certain you have the correct number of judges.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:    Enter online at   www.speechwire.comEntries will be accepted through Tuesday January 17, 2023.  Changes and drops may be made until Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., but you will be charged the entry fee for any student originally entered.  The web site will be closed Tuesday night.

MEALSAll student and judge/coach entries will be provided one meal. Please make the meal selections, including noting all gluten free options on Speechwire. It is the responsibility of the coach to ensure all meal numbers are correct. Additions or changes at the tournament will not be accepted. All coaches should add a meal for themselves even if they are not judging. Judge and/or Coach Meals will cost $10.00 a meal. The student meal is included in the entry fee.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE:  Registration will take place between 7:15-7:45 a.m. in the Media Center. Please make sure to check in at this time or we will have to drop the team. We will offer 5 rounds of competition in all events, 2 sessions and a final session of Congressional Debate and 4 rounds of competition in World Schools Debate. An updated schedule will appear on Speechwire.com. Awards should begin around 4:45 p.m.

PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE: Resolved: The United States Federal Government should increase its diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve internal armed conflicts in West Asia.

LINCOLN DOUGLAS DEBATE: Resolved: Justice requires open borders for human migration.

STUDENT CONGRESS LEGISLATION:  e-mail by Wednesday January 11, 2023, to dariocamara@gmail.com. Legislation will be posted on Speechwire under “Files for Download” on or around Thursday January 12, 2023

EXTEMP TOPIC AREAS: US Politics, US Economics, Asia, Central and South America, Global Investment

IMPROMPTU TOPIC AREAS: Past Presidents, Banned Books, Disney Plus, Twitter Posts, Country Music 

WORLD SCHOOL DEBATE MOTIONS:

This House believes that rehabilitation should be prioritized over retribution in criminal sentencing.

This House would ban lethal autonomous weapons.

This House regrets the rise of slum tourism.

This House, as the United States, would publicly recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation.
