Late additions are discouraged but may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. Please use SpeechWire to make your own drops up until Sat. Dec. 10 at 6:00 a.m., after which you need to text/call Candy Brown at 812-269-2710 and/or email browncg@indiana.edu. We will collect drop fees at the time of registration, so please bring a checkbook just in case.

Awards -- Double ribbons will be awarded to the top ten places in each event (20 entries). Team plaques will be awarded to the top three schools in both large and small divisions for Team Sweepstakes. Jackson Creek will not participate in Team Sweepstakes.

Events -- We will be offering all 13 Indiana Middle School Speech & Debate Events, including IN MS Debate format. There will be 3 rounds of Speech, 4 rounds of Debate. See the current rules here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CLkJ7SuHV2fxnLNTmI_ae11cYdBGQfep3iutZtHkTIA/edit

Debate -- MS Debate Resolution for 2022:

Humans are primarily driven by self-interest.

Discussion -- MS Discussion Theme (second half of season):

Overall Topic: What is the appropriate role for the U.S. in global affairs?

Round 1: What is the appropriate role for the U.S. in climate change?

Round 2: What is the appropriate role for the U.S. in aiding with the world hunger crisis?

Round 3: What is the appropriate role for the U.S. in globally infectious diseases?

Doubling -- Doubling will be allowed (and encouraged) in all categories with two exceptions. These specific combinations will not be available:

DEBATE + DISCUSSION

BROADCAST + EXTEMP

Doublers in Debate should go their Speech round first--ask their judge to speak before other competitiors, leave immediately after speaking, and go straight to their Debate round. Doublers in Discussion should go to their Discussion round before going to their other Speech event. Doublers in Broadcasting Flight A should go to Broadcasting first, then their other Speech event; Flight B should go to their other Speech event first, then go to Broadcasting.

Judges -- Each school is responsible for bringing a MINIMUM of one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof (6 entries = 2 judges). Judges need to bring a laptop for scoring. We will score online through SpeechWire (instead of paper ballots). If you are bringing a lot of solo debaters, it would really help if you are able to bring extra judges (ideally 1:2 ratio)! Please share the Event Rules (link above) and Judging Instructions (Files for Download) with your judges in advance of the tournament. All coaches/judges should be prepared to show government-issued photo IDs at Registration.

Tips -- Please remember that in order to enter students and judges in the tournament, you must first collect email addresses from them, set up SpeechWire accounts for them, and remind each of them to activate their accounts. Participants cannot share the same email address. If you intend to record NSDA points, sync your students' NSDA and SpeechWire accounts prior to the tournament; this allows for auto posting of points--a huge time saver for you!

Concessions

Food will be available for purchase throughout the tournament. Concession sales help us to pay for ribbons/trophies/plaques, SpeechWire, etc., so please encourage your students to buy their lunch/snacks from us! Complimentary food and beverages will be provided for judges/coaches.

Parking

Students can be dropped off at the north entrance to Ballantine Hall; the student lounge is directly inside the main doors in 013. Car parking is available for free in the Atwater and East garages--both are a 5-10 minute walk from Ballantine Hall: https://parking.indiana.edu/facilities/parking-garages.html. Buses can park for free at the IU Stadium. There are ADA spaces to the east of Ballantine Hall. Please be aware that you will be charged to park in the IMU lot north of Ballantine, and parking in other surface lots requires an IU permit; violators may be ticketed.

We look forward to seeing you in Bloomington!

Best,

Candy Brown, Professor of Religious Studies, Indiana University
