You are cordially invited to the Florida Civics & Debate Initiative 2022 State Championship, to be held Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Colonial High School in Orlando, FL. 

The FCDI State Championship at Colonial offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. ONLY FCDI schools and all schools who have competed in an FCDI tournament during the 21-22 school year are welcome to compete in this tournament.

Please read all tournament information carefully as this tournament operates differently than our regional tournaments.

 

There will be three rounds of preliminary competition in all events except Congressional Debate, where there will be two 2-hour sessions and one final session. There will be one elimination round in events with 18 entries or less. There will be two elimination rounds in events with more than 18 entries.  The tournament will begin at 8:30am Eastern time. We hope to finish awards by 6PM, but please be flexible regarding the end time of the event.

REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 6:00pm.

Please plan to arrive at Colonial HS, 6100 Oleander Dr, Orlando, FL 32807, no later than 8:00am the morning of the tournament to check in.

 

EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Champion Awards in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate.

No Double Entry.  If a coach submits the same student for two events, that student will be automatically disqualified for both events.

Observers are allowed, but must be registered.

 

DEBATE TOPICS:

NOTE: Students will debate BOTH sides of the resolution. 

 

Lincoln Douglas Debate: We are using the March/April NSDA topic - Resolved: In a democracy, a free press ought to prioritize objectivity over advocacy.

Public Forum Debate: We are using April NSDA topic - Resolved: Japan should revise Article 9 of its Constitution to develop offensive military capabilities.

World Schools Debate: We are using the followng NSDA April Prepared Prompt: This House would ban the use of data-driven surveillance for commercial purposes. 

Policy Debate: We are using the 2021-2022 NSDA topic- Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States.

 

Extemporaneous Debate: Topic Areas Preliminary Rounds: The Executive Branch; The Judicial Branch; The Legislative Branch. Finals topic area: America's Founding Principles and Guiding Philosophy

Extemporaneous Speaking: Preliminary Rounds: US Economy and Business; International Economies; Science and Technology; The Middle East. Elimination Rounds: (Octos if necessary)The Executive Branch; (Semis) International Diplomacy and Warfare; (Finals)The First Amendment

Extemporaneous Sports Analysis: Preliminary Rounds: Soccer, Baseball, Martial Arts and Boxing. Elimination Rounds: College Football (semis); GOATS (finals)

 

CONGRESS LEGISLATION: Submit proposed legislation in either NSDA or NCFL format (either is fine) to ­­­­­­Apryl Taylor, taylorfcdi@gmail.com, no later than noon Tuesday, April 5.

JUDGES:  We will need your judges in order to run the tournament. All schools must supply judges. 

The judge ratio for this tournament is 1 judge for every two debate entries; 1 judge for every 5 speech/interp/congress entries.

Please bring parents, teachers, former students, etc.!

Adults and coaches may judge any division. Qualified varsity with at least 75 NSDA points on record may judge the middle school and novice divisions. Judges need to be trained. It is the coach’s responsibility to ensure that all judges they provide have reviewed the judging resources. It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system.

 

FOOD

Concessions (snacks and drinks) will be available for purchase with cash only.

Lunches will be provided for all competitors, judges, and coaches at no extra charge. Coaches must order the correct number of meals AND designate the meal type when placing their school’s meal order.

 

LODGING: There is no hotel block for this tournament. There are numerous hotels available at reasonable rates just north of the Orlando International Airport (Intersection of SR 528 aka the Beachline and SR 436 aka Semoran Blvd). These are the closest hotels to the school and offer a variety of eating options within walking distance. Please check the files for Download tab for a list of possible hotel choices.

 

COACHES: Coaches must be on site for the duration of the tournament.

 

FEES: FCDI member schools pay no fees. Non-FCDI schools pay $4.00/student.
