District III Spring AFA-NST National Qualifying Tournament Saturday, March 5, 2022

Virtually Hosted- A Synchronous Live Tournament

On behalf of the AFA-NIS District 3 Committee it is my pleasure to invite you to the Spring 2022 AFA- NST District 3 Qualifier.  It will be hosted online as a live synchronous tournament via the SpeechWire/Yaatly combination on Saturday, March 5, 2022.  The tournament will be posted on SpeechWire soon. You will receive the Yaatly link the week of the tournament, but here it is now as well:

Tournament Director/Chair: Chas Womelsdorf, chasswomelsdorf@gmail.com  205-535-0736

This invitation contains information relevant to the tournament as well as important information for reporting legs/at-large qualifications.

Please forward this invite to any district schools that might not otherwise receive this information and let me know about them so that I can contact them directly. As always, I owe a special thanks to Randy Cox, University of Texas at Austin for serving as our treasurer. I also owe a special thanks to Craig Brown of Kansas State University, because I’ve plagiarized him repeatedly, including most of this invitation. He’s awesome.

D3 Entry Deadlines

Your initial D3 Tournament entry needs to be done using Speechwire.com.  The deadline is Tuesday, 5:00 pm, March 1, 2022.  No additional entries can be accepted after this deadline.

You may drop or replace entries without penalty until Wednesday, March 2, 5:00 pm.

Entry Fees: $5.00 per slot.

Judging Fees: $10 per uncovered slot.  Each judge covers six slots per pattern.  If you have additional people who can judge, please let me know in advance so arrangements can be made to use them.  Because of the online nature of the tournament, we have a wide net for judges.  What I’m asking is that each team competing at the tournament reach out to their alumni to serve as additional judges.  If we can make that work, we can also have a higher, more diverse quality of a judge pool.

AFA-NST Subscription Dues

If you have not paid your dues yet, they are $30 as long as they are paid by December 01. After that point, the dues then are $50.  I’ve included an invoice at the end of the invite, or you can use the form on the AFA-NST website (www.afa-niet.org). The district prefers that you pay your AFA-NST dues directly to the district.  Please send the dues to our D3 Treasurer, Randy Cox.  He can be reached at mrcox@austin.utexas.edu

If you are paying by check, please make it payable to AFA-NST District III.  This applies to both the tournament fees and the AFA-NST Dues.

Tournament Fees are due no later than March 19, 2022

Drops/Changes

Drops/Changes After March 2, 5:00 pm: Any drops or changes need to be communicated to me ASAP- preferably by text or a phone call to 205-535-0736.

Wednesday March 2, 5:00 pm until 8:30 am, Thursday, March 3: $10 per drop, plus the original entry fee.

Thursday, March 3, 8:30 am through March 5 registration: $50 per drop, including those made at registration.

Dropping a judge after Thursday, March 3, 5:00 pm will incur a $150 fee, in addition to any additional fees for event coverage on the entry.

Entry Rules Unique to the D3 Tournament

•    Schools are limited to no more than five (5) entries per event.

•    Students are limited to no more than two events (2) per AFA-NST event pattern. Even though we will be using a two-pattern format for the D3 Tournament, students need to use the AFA-NST three pattern format (A: Inf, Imp, Pro B: Per, POI, Duo, Ext C: ADS Poe CA DI) to control cross-entry. Scheduling accommodations will be made for students with multiple events in the same pattern during the actual tournament.

•    Students may not enter an event if they are already qualified at-large in that event. Clarification- If you have qualified Duo at-large with one partner, you may enter another Duo with a different partner.

•    All events will use the AFA-NST rules/descriptions.
