Dear Colleagues,

The students, coaches, and alumni of the Doane University Forensics Team are SO VERY EXCITED to invite you to the Feline Frolic Swing. The first half of the swing will be held asynchronously March 1st - 4th and the second half will be IN-PERSON on the Doane University Campus in Crete, NE. Both tournaments will offer all eleven AFA individual events. Saturday will also include the experimental event, Smorgasbord (description below).

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at jennifer.torres@doane.edu or nathaniel.wilson@doane.edu.

Smorgasbord
This event is not ranked and has no event requirements. The purpose is to give students who have already qualified but have never attended an in-person college tournament a chance to try one of their events in front of a live audience. If you have students who have 1) never been to an in-person college tournement and 2) have already qualified their events. Please enter them in smorgasbord and choose "novice" as their division.

Tournament Structure:
We anticipate that entry numbers will be low. So, the final tournament schedule will be announced after entries are in. We are planning for a 4 round tournament where the first two timeslots will consist of both prelim and straight-to-final rounds. We will condense to 3 rounds if possible. A tentative schedule is below.
Preliminary round tie break scheme: ranks, strength of opposition, and speaker points
Final round tie break scheme: predominance of 1s, ranks, judges preference, reciprocals, speaker points

Any single section events will be run as "straight-to-finals" and will utilize the finals tie break scheme.

COVID-19 Protocols:

-Masking: All attendees (students, judges, and observers) are required to wear a face mask while indoors (except for eating or drinking). We encourage everyone to remain distanced during those exceptions.

-We will act in accordance with the following AFA-NST guidelines regarding mask removal for performances:

Competitors may remove their mask to perform.

-Competitors may choose to remove their mask while performing.

-Competitors may also choose to wear their mask while performing.

-All non-performing participants must continue to wear their mask during performances.

-All competitors may not begin speaking until they are at the front of the performance space; they are not allowed to approach the audience during a performance for any reason, including handing out materials.

-Competitors and observers may exit a competition room at any time in accordance with the NST “open door” policy.

-Judges will be instructed to not consider whether or not a student was wearing a mask in adjudication.

-All competition rooms will be set up to maximize space between the performer and the audience.

-Paper masks will be available at the entrance of each competition building. Hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes will be available throughout the buildings.

-If any competitor becomes ill or is exposed after registration and before the tournament, THEY SHOULD NOT ATTEND IN PERSON. We will be prepared for hybrid competition. Any student who is quarantined (or should remain isolated) will still be allowed to compete via Zoom.

If you have any concerns or questions about the COVID requirements, please contact us.

Judges:

One judge is required for every 6 entries.  PLEASE make every attempt to bring enough judges to cover your entry. This being one of the first in-person tournaments in the region, we expect some difficulty getting as many judges as an online tournament.

Entries:

All entries are due Tuesday, Mar. 1st by 6:00 pm via Speechwire.

Fees:

In an effort to keep costs low, we will be charging $2 per slot; each uncovered slot will be an additional $12. We would much rather have your usable judges than your money!

Judges dropped at registration will incur a $50 fee. Please make checks out to: Doane Forensics

If you are also attending the async portion of Feline Frolic, you are welcome to pay your async fees at registration on Saturday

Accomodations:

If a student or coach on your team requires any accomodations, please let us know.

Contact Us:

We understand the idea of an in-person tournament is an exciting and nerve-wracking one. We want to do everything we can to make the experience as safe, fun, and educational as possible. Please reach out to us with any and all questions, concerns, or ideas you may have!
