You are cordially invited to the Florida Civics & Debate Initiative Statewide Tournament #5, to be held Saturday, January 29, 2022. This tournament will be virtual via Yaatly.

The Florida Civics & Debate Initiative Statewide Tournament #5 offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. All Florida schools are welcome to compete in this tournament.
 
There will be THREE rounds of competition in all events except Congressional Debate, where there will be TWO 90-minute sessions. The tournament will begin at 8:30am Eastern time with Extemp and Extemp Sports Analysis draw. The full schedule can be found in the Schedule tab on the registration page for the tournament.
 
REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2022 at 11:59pm.
 
EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Middle School Champion Award in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate.
 
Speechwire student accounts are required for participation at FCDI tournaments. Please be sure that your school's firewall will not block Speechwire if you are using a school email address. Instructions on how to upload speech/inter videos can be found on the “Files for Download” tab. Videos must be uploaded by 11:59pm Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
ORAL INTERPRETATION: Video #1 is POETRY, Video #2 is PROSE. Video #3 is POETRY.
 
Observers are allowed.
 
DEBATE TOPICS:
 
NOTE: Students will debate BOTH sides of the resolution. 
 
Lincoln Douglas Debate: We are using the January/February NSDA topic - Resolved: The appropriation of outer space by private entities is unjust.
Policy Debate:We are using the 2021-22 NSDA topic - Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States.
Public Forum Debate: We are using the January NSDA topic - Resolved: The United States federal government should legalize all illicit drugs.
World Schools Debate:  We are using the Following NSDA prepared motion - This House beileves that the "Great Resignation" will have a long lasting positive impact on the workforce. 
Extemporaneous Speaking: (1) US Healthcare; (2) Africa; (3) The Judicial Branch.
Extemporaneous Sports Analysis Topic Areas:  (1) College Sports; (2) MLB; (3) NFL.
Sports League Advocacy Match Up (SLAM): Resolved: The MLB should implement a salary cap. 
 
CONGRESS LEGISLATION: Submit proposed legislation in either NSDA or NCFL format (either is fine) to Apryl Taylor no later than noon on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Apryl's email address is taylorfcdi@gmail.com.

JUDGES: Adults and coaches may judge any division. Qualified varsity with at least 75 NSDA points on record may judge the middle school and novice divisions. Judges need to be trained. They may take the NSDA judge training course if they did not attend any judge training. It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system.
 
The judge ratio for this tournament is 1 judge for every two debate entries; 1 judge for every 5 speech/interp/congress entries.
