General Information: The Moorhead and Woodbury Speech Teams are so excited to invite you to our tournament! Come join us in January for a fun, competitive, collaborative, and exciting two-day tournament. Our goal is to provide you with an excellent experience, but in a way that reminds us all why we love this activity. We are working hard to ensure students, judges, and coaches all have a great time. Come enjoy this co-hosted tournament at Woodbury High School. We will have many surprises throughout the day for coaches and students to make you feel special!

Important Dates: 

Registration Deadline: Monday, January 24th at 5PM

Drop Deadline: Changes can be made to your entry until January 26th at 5PM. Entry fees will be frozen for drops after this time.

Tournament: Friday, January 28th & Saturday, January 29th 

 

NOTE: NOVICES ARE WELCOME TO COMPETE ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.

 

*Note: our tournament is marked as "hybrid" on speechwire because Extemp Musical Theater prelims are async. Everything else is in-person!

 

Schedule 

Friday, January 28th (Novice)

 

NOTE ABOUT ARRIVAL TIME: BUSES CAN arrive ​VIA the SOUTH ENTRANCE ​between 2:30-2:45PM OR after 3:15PM. Please come directly to the cafeteria. Please have buses park in the Junior Lot (near the baseball fields after dropping off students. If buses arrive between 2:45 and 3:15PM, please DO NOT HAVE BUSES drop off students at the SOUTH ENTRANCE. Instead, students will need to walk from the Junior Lot. AFTER 3:15PM, buses can resume dropping off at the South Entrance (where the tournament will take place). School gets out at 3:06PM-- so there will be a few minutes of school getting let out and students leaving. Any questions about arrival on Friday can be directed to Suzanne White at 651-247-0884.

 

3:15-3:45PM- Team Registration at Help! table near Media Center (Head coaches please check-in)

3:30PM- Judges Meeting in Lecture Hall 

3:30PM- Draw Meeting in Media Center

4:15PM- Round 1 

5:45PM- Round 2 

7:15PM- Final Round-Non Draw Events

7:30PM- Final Round Draw Events 

ASAP- Novice Awards in Auditorium

 
 

*There will be a second judge in one of the two prelim rounds to ensure each student is given at least three scores and plenty of feedback.

 

JUDGE UPDATE FOR NOVICE NIGHT: We recognize how difficult it is to find judges for two days and applaud mentoring in the activity. For this reason, senior speakers will be allowed to judge the novice division on Friday night. 


·Senior Judges must be in their THIRD or FOURTH year of competition

·Senior judges must act professionally before,during, and after rounds (not sharing ranks, being respectful to the younger competitors, writing developed critiqued sheets, being positive and encouraging, etc.)

·Senior judges MUST attend the judges meeting on Friday; failure to do so will result in a team being charged for a missing judge

Categories & Double Entering: 

  • All NSDA and MSHSL events + Impromptu will be offered. The novice division will be on Friday, January 28th and Varisty will compete on Saturday, January 29th.
  • The discussion tasks will be released on Monday via Speechwire.
  • In order to faciliate double entered discussants, the discussion rounds will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of each round.
  • Speakers may double and triple enter at your own risk. However, you may not triple enter if you are in any draw category except Impromptu.

Judging Requirements: Teams are expected to bring 1 judge for every 6 entries. Judging slots not covered will incur a $100 fee. Teams will be expected to provided judges for each division they are competing in. So if you are only competing in Friday's novice portion, you are only expected to bring judges to this part of the tournament.

NIETOC Bid Tournament: This tournament is officially a bid tournament site for the National Individual Event Tournament of Champions. Students competing in Varsity Drama, Duo, Extemp. Speaking, Humorous, Informative, Original Oratory, Prose (counts as a Drama bid), or Program Oral Interpretation have the ability to earn a bid that will get them one step closer to competing at the NIETOC Tournament in Houston, Texas in May 2022. If there are enough entries in any of the NIETOC categories, we may offer a Merit and Consolation final to offer more bids. For more information visit their official website.

 

MSHSL Categories:

 
  • Extemp. Reading (Prose): Students will draw from stories 1-13. No stories may be repeated in rounds or finals.
  • Extemp. Reading (Poetry): Studens will draw from poems 1-20. No poems may be repeated in rounds or finals.
  • Storytelling: Students will draw from stories 1-10.  No stories may be repeated in rounds or finals.
  • Discussion: Area I of Outline (Section Topics), DISCUSSION TASKS will be made available before the tournament begins. We will post the link here and on the live document.
