Dear Speech Coaches:

We would like to invite you to the 2022 Worthington Trojan Tournament. This will be an in-person, 3 round tournament. As of now, masks will be required for everyone attending, speakers may remove them for their performance. We will stay in accordance with ISD 518’s and the MSHSL’s guidelines, so these requirements may change. We will notify you of any changes as soon as we know of them.

REGISTRATION & FEES:

 

We will be offering competition in all 13 MSHSL categories, and there is no cap as to number of students who attend. Teams will need to supply 1 judge for every 6 competitors or fraction thereof. We will not have judges for hire. Double entries are allowed in all events, discussion rounds will start 15 minutes late to accommodate any double entries in that category.

Speechwire registration deadline is Wednesday, February 2^nd at 3:00 pm. At that time, all judges will be locked. Changes can be made to a team’s entry without cost until Saturday, February 5^th at 7:00 AM. After this point drops will be allowed, but not be refunded. Adds will be allowed at the discretion of the tournament manager.

AWARDS

 

Individual awards will be presented to participants who place in the top 6, as well as red and blue ribbons for those who are close.  Team sweepstakes awards will be presented to teams placing 1-4.

 

DRAWS

 

Draws will be conducted live.  We will draw for Rounds 1 & 2, please have your students repeat a selection for Round 3.  Cuttings will be from the 1st ten stories in Storytelling, 1st ten stories in Extemp. Reading, and all of the poetry selections in Extemp. Reading.

 

DISCUSSION

 

Since this is going to the first tournament of the season for most of us, tasks will be sent out via email to coaches on Monday, January 31^st. Please distribute them to your students to help facilitate the discussions.  We also plan on moving discussion rounds back 15 minutes for possible double entries.  If there are none, then we will move discussion rounds back to start on time with the other categories.

All students and judges will need a live.speechwire.com account. Please set that up before Saturday morning. Have everyone log in to their account to verify that their account works.

 

JUDGING

 

For judges, we are going to offer both paper ballots/critiques as well as online ballots/critiques. Please note upon registration of your judges which method they prefer. If using online ballots, please make sure all critiques are entered before the end of the tournament.
