Dear Coaches,

We are excited to invite you to our third tournament of the North Florida Catholic Forensic League 2021-2022 season.  This tournament will be held IN PERSON at Horizon High School (Winter Garden, FL), on Saturday, November 6th, 2021. Team check-in on the day of the tournament will begin at 8:30 am and close at 9 am. HEAD COACHES will be asked to verify their entries to tab staff at check-in. Some reminders from our earlier email about return to live tournaments...

- E-Ballots - After taking 1.5 years learning how to use online systems and getting teams and judges used to these systems we don’t want to look back.  We intend to go paperless and use e-ballots for the tournaments.  Because of this devices will be necessary (especially for judges) at tournaments.

- Price of Tournaments/ Lunch Provided - With the return to in-person tournaments, and paying host schools for providing lunch to competitors the NFCFL will revert its prices to the formerly established $14.  The lunch order will be part of the registration for the tournament.  Options will be provided for you on Speechwire, and there will always be a vegetarian option.

- Registration End Times - Because of the need to finalize lunch orders with sufficient time for the host school to arrange a final order, tournament registration will return to the traditional deadline of Friday of the week before the tournament (8 days out) at 5pm.

- Stocking the Judges Lounge - Many schools in the past have been fearful of hosting because of a lack of budgetary support or well-established parent support.  Going forward we are looking to work with all attending member schools to provide for the judge lounge.  We will create a sign-up sheet for each tournament and ask for help supplying some basics (coffee, drinks, fruit, doughnuts, bagels, snacks, etc.).  Together we can hopefully make it easier for teams to be able to say “Yes” to offering to host, inviting 20-30 schools into their space.

- Covid Requirements - As the teams in our league come from counties (and private school systems) with diverse Covid protocols and expectations, we intend to create an environment at our tournaments that is both safe and welcoming for all to participate. In order to do this NFCFL will require…

--Masks at tournaments at ALL TIMES for all students and adults except when actively eating/drinking or actively performing pieces.  All those not actively performing should make certain their masks are on.

--Social distancing in enclosed spaces to the best of your ability.

***Failure to comply will result in disqualification to participate at the NFCFL event in question and a request to leave the tournament.

ALL participants, competitors, and judges must have Speechwire accounts and be Linked. NEW competitors & Judges will receive an email with a password to be able to link their account and, for judges, to access E-Ballots. PLEASE VERIFY THIS WITH YOUR STUDENTS & JUDGES BEFORE SATURDAY MORNING.  Please also make certain that each judge has added a phone number to their Speechwire account where they can be reached.

Our tournament will offer a complete day of NCFL events, with novice-only options should enough competitors register to justify the split, except in Congress which will be comprised of mixed chambers.  If an event does not have enough entries in each division to justify the split the event will be mixed novice and varsity with recognition being given to the top novices.

We will have four rounds in all events except Congress, which will have two sessions. While not required to compete teams wishing to submit Congress legislation for this tournament must send their bills as Google Docs to thechairhighlyfrowns@gmail.com before 10 days out (Wed. 10/27).  At that time the tournament legislation will be finalized on the live doc...

Congress Legislation MUST be submitted as google docs using the bill templates available at congressionaldebate.org. The docket for each chamber will be set the morning of the tournament by the Tab Staff.

The Extemporaneous Speaking topics for CFL 3 are:

1) Covid 19
2) China
3) Technology
4) Sports and Society

*Each round may contain typically international questions and typically domestic questions.

We hope to see all of you at the tournament. Please note that it is the responsibility of each Head Coach to provide the required number of TRAINED judges:
1 debate judge for every 2 teams and 1 speech judge for every 5 entries. JUDGES LISTED AS I.E. MUST BE TRAINED & PREPARED TO JUDGE CONGRESS.
FLEX judges, who are trained to judge All events are required, IN ADDITION TO the standard requirements. For Schools with more than FIVE (5) entries, one (1) ADDITIONAL Flex Judge; If a school has more than TEN (10)entries, then TWO (2)ADDITIONAL Flex judges must be provided. Head coaches may also designate ANY other judge as a FLEX judge. If the required number of judges is not provided, including drops on the morning of the Tournament, schools will be required to drop competitors.

I wish the best of luck to you and your students as you prepare for our upcoming events. We hope that you have a great tournament and we are excited to see you all back IN PERSON!

Best wishes,
The NFCFL Executive Board
