MILE HIGH TOURNAMENT INVITATION 2021
We are thrilled to invite you to the 2021 Mile High Invitational hosted in-person at East High School on Saturday, November 13th. In partnership with our administration and the district we are very excited to offer a fully-masked, in person opportunity for speech and debate competitors in the metro area. We believe a safe, reasonable in-person experience is possible and are excited to offer the following guidelines and procedures to ensure safe in-person competition.
COVID PROTOCOLS
Following current COVID protocols for DPS, masks must be worn at all times by everyone in the building.
All adults must be vaccinated. Proof of vaccination will be checked at the door (this does include coaches!). Coaches, volunteers, and judges must all provide proof of vaccination. No spectators will be allowed.
A judges lounge will be active with room to social distance and alternative spaces to eat if desired by the judge. Meals will be provided.
Schools will be able to bring a total of 35 competitors (not entries), which is the student capacity for each hub.
If requested and numbers allow, some larger programs may be given 2 hubs with a total of 70 competitors.
Each school will be assigned a team hub where that school will spend time between rounds.
Updates to the tournament will be communicated over email blast, and through the use of Prometheans in each room.
Coaches will be responsible for ensuring their competitors keep masks on while at the tournament. There will be hallway monitoring from administration and Denver East volunteers.
Failure to follow COVID protocols may result in the disqualification of the entire team.
Competitors will have three options for eating: outside if weather allows, go off campus to businesses nearby, or unmask in team hubs for 15 minutes at a time (this is consistent with current DPS policy)
We understand that the culture at your school may be different than ours. Please consider these protocols with your team stringently and know that you are agreeing to follow them by signing up your team on Speechwire.
General Tournament Information:
We will offer three preliminary rounds breaking to semifinals in each event.
NIETOC: We are proud to announce that we are a bid tournament to the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC). Bids can be earned in the following events: HI, DI, DUO, POI, OO, INF, and EXTEMP. Bids will be awarded based on registration numbers in each event.
Rules and Resolutions: All rules and resolutions will align with NSDA for the month of November.
Doubling: All competitors may enter up to two IEs. Debaters may not double enter.
Judging and registration: All teams will be expected to provide judges that cover ALL their entries! Your judges/ALL adults associated with your team MUST provide proof of vaccination upon arrival to the tournament. 1 speech judge covers 6 entries, 1 debate judge covers 2 entries. Failure to provide judges information by November 10th to cover your entries will result in entries being dropped, to satisfy these ratios. Given the current circusmtance, we will not access judges fees, you MUST provide judges to cover your entries or they will be dropped. Your judges must provide proof of vaccination.
Entry fees are 15 dollars per individual event and 30 dollars per debate event.
Please make checks payable to “DEFT” IMPORTANT: Please send checks to 1600 City Park Esplanade 80206 Denver, CO ATTN: Noah Kaplan”. This will help keep checks from floating around and mystery money remaining in your account.
$10 drop fees will be assessed after November 10th 5:00 pm MTN
We are excited about the opportunities this year and cant wait to share them with you.
Best,
Noah Kaplan
