The Hawken School Speech & Debate team cordially invites you and your team to attend the 5th Annual Larry H. Banks Memorial Invitational named in honor of our team's founder, Larry H Banks.  This year's tournament will be held on Saturday, November 13th, but we have added a PDQ with THREE extra rounds for Policy Debate on Friday, November 12th!
 
As tournament hosts, Hawken School commits to the following statements:

TOURNAMENT DETAILS:
 
This is a virtual on-line tournament in the Cleveland District.  All events for this tournament will be synchronous.
 
****PLEASE NOTE THAT BECAUSE THIS TOURNAMENT WILL BE HELD COMPLETELY ON LINE, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT COACHES ENTER A VALID EMAIL FOR EVERY JUDGE AND COMPETITOR.****.
 
Tournament Location:   NSDA Campus via Speechwire Tournament Services
 
Tournament Events
Note that there are no entry caps for this tournament.
  • Individual Events: We will offer a total of four (4) rounds of competition and double entry is allowed in all speech events except Extemporaneous Speaking. 
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debate: We will offer four (4) rounds of competition. We will be using the November/December NSDA Topic, Resolved: A just government ought to recognize an unconditional right of workers to strike. 
  • Policy Debate: We will offer five (5) preliminary rounds of competition plus elimination rounds starting at 4 pm Friday evening  and all day on Saturday.   We will be using the 2021-2022 NSDA Topic, Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States.
  • Public Forum Debate: We will offer four (4) rounds of competition on Saturday. We will be using the November/December NSDA Topic, Resolved: Increased United States federal regulation of cryptocurrency transactions and/or assets will produce more benefits than harms.
  • Student Congress: We will be utilizing the November docket assigned from the OSDA for legislation.  That docket is available to all the schools on Speechwire. We will have 3 preliminary sessions of Congress (approximately 1hr 30mins each). We will be scoring based on judge preference. We will also be using direct questioning.
  
Schedule:
  • We will ask that coaches make sure that their competitors and judges are in your team room 30 minutes before the first round and that they notify TAB immediately of any drops so rounds are not delayed.  
  • The schedule for rounds is posted, but coaches, competitors, and judges are responsible for responding to the text  and email alerts and electronic postings for actual round times as the tournament progresses.
  • Awards - 4:00pm (Goal Time)
 
Deadlines:
  • Deadline to add/drop entries: Thursday, November 11th @ 8:00 p.m. 
  • Deadline to add/edit judges: Thursday, November 11th @ 8:00 p.m.
Registration Fees:
  • $10.00 per entry in Policy, PF, and Duo
  • $5.00 per entry in all other events.

Judge Requirements:
  • IE:  One (1) judge for every five (5) IE entries (a Duo team counts as one entry)
  • PF/LD/CX: One (1) judge for every 2 debaters/teams.
  • Congress: One (1) scorer or parliamentarian for each school that has Congress entries.
 
Hired Judge Information:
We will have some judges available for hire if you are unable to cover your judging commitment. (It isn't likely we will be able to have policy judges for hire, but you may ask.) ALL HIRED JUDGING REQUESTS MUST BE MADE PRIOR TO THE JUDGE ENTRY DEADLINE AND APPROVED BY THE TOURNAMENT – Please Use the link that follows here to request a judge.

Fees are assessed by each uncovered entry:
  • $10 per uncovered CON entry
  • $10 per uncovered IE entry
  • $25 per uncovered LD/PF entry
  • $40 per day per uncovered POLICY team if we are able to find a policy judge
 
Awards:
  • Our tournament trophies are being created in the Hawken Fab Lab by Hawken students! We will deliver or send the awards to the coach at each of your schools for distribution to the competitors the week after the tournament.
  • Trophies will be awarded to the top six placements in all events.
  • School sweepstakes will be presented based on the top competitor in each event for each school. There will be a team sweepstakes trophy for the top 6 teams.
