Welcome to CFL 3 where we will be back in person at Ridge High School!

As promised, we will continue to monitor the ongoing pandemic situation, and could pivot to an online tournament, should that determination be necessary.

Please familiarize yourself with the following on-site safety precautions:

Mandatory Masks & Safety Measures:
Due to the current health situation, we will be enforcing the NJ mask mandate in all schools and social distancing. All schools will be assigned tables in the cafeteria.  Team members must remain at their assigned table(s) throughout the day when they are not actively in their rounds or can congregate in public communal areas while maintaining social distancing. BE SMART!

Competitors, students, judges, and coaches must also wear a mask at all times throughout the day, with the only exception being when people are actively eating or drinking. People who do not wear masks will be removed from the tournament and their school will be fined. If there is a medical mask exemption with documentation, that medical documentation must be sent to Dr. Reagan at jreagan@unioncatholic.org by MONDAY, December 13, 2021.

Food:
Due to safety concerns, no hot food will be sold.  Boxed lunches will be available for purchase via pre-order.  Order forms will be sent out at a later date.  Students may bring their own food for lunch.

Bottled water, soft drinks, and packaged snacks will also be sold.

Food will be provided for judges.

All judge requests must be submitted by the Sunday preceding the day of the tournament (December 12).  This request is not a guarantee that a judge will be hired to fulfill your obligation.  Once the tournament begins, we will defer to the league’s policy for uncovered judges and require a school to drop entries to meet their quota. Paying an uncovered judge fee will not be permitted.  A judge fine of $75 per round will be owed for judges who do not pick up their ballots or for judges not qualified to judge a round (for example a student judge not being indicated as such and judging Varsity rounds).

All information related to the tournament for coaches, judges, and students can be found in our Google Live Doc: https://speechwire.live/newarkcfl

Congress bills are due to me by December 9.

We will strive to have our judge meeting start by 8:15AM on December 18. ALL judges must be in attendance for this meeting. Details on the judge meeting location can be found on the Google Doc.

A judge fine of $75 per round will be owed for judges who do not pick up their ballots or for judges not qualified to judge a round (for example a student judge not being indicated as such and judging Varsity rounds).

Please read the following:

1.     Make sure you create accounts for each of your students in Speechwire.  You will be unable to enter your students without them successfully creating and activating their accounts.  This video tutorial will walk you through the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcGivaEKSuk

We are unable to provide any support with student accounts! All inquiries must be sent to support@speechwire.com

2.     Once you have created accounts for your students, make sure they can login and subscribe to live updates. These updates tell students when schematics for rounds are posted and most importantly, tell students if they broke to elimination rounds.
It is imperative students subscribe to updates so that they can be informed of schematics and not miss their round.
This video by Ben Stewart of Speechwire is an excellent walkthrough for your students. Please share this with them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQgqptPqNtA

3.     In speech 1 judge is needed for every 5 speech entries, for debate 1 judge is needed for every 2 entries per division (1 PF team and 1 LD competitor = 2 judges needed).

PLEASE be proactive and share this video with your judges for each tournament so they know how to login to their Speechwire account (this will be created for them, you do not need to do anything after you provide their email address on the registration form) as well as how to receive their ballot, use it, and subscribe to updates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJXxeVS-KgM

I guarantee that if judges do not watch this brief tutorial they will find judging the tournament difficult. This will result in a delayed tournament and a less than optimal experience for you, your students, and your fellow coaches and competitors.

If you have any questions, contact me immediately!  I would much prefer that you ask 100 questions via email before the tournament rather than on the day of the tournament.  Good luck!
