20 September 2021

Dear Colleague:

Pine Creek High School wishes to welcome you and your team to our IN-PERSON novice tournament to be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021. It is our hope that this tournament will provide your team with a positive beginning to the speech season.

In addition to novice competition, NSDA will be offering a judging workshop. We will complete the general and events portions at this workshop. This is an excellent opportunity for prospective critics such as parents, new teachers, and recent graduates into the program. The workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. Please email me at Kathryn.spencer@asd20.org with a list of interested potential adult judges’ names so we know how to prepare for training.

PRE REGISTER on speechwire.com. The best way to do this is to FIRST enter your student’s names into your NSDA roster then sync your roster to speechwire. Registration will be open next week. Please register early.

REGISTRATION: Pine Creek High School – 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. We plan to end around 3:00 p.m.

AWARDS

Generous numbers of ribbons only will be awarded for 1st-6th place in both debate and events.

DEFINITION OF A NOVICE COMPETITOR

The spirit of our meet is to provide a positive learning environment for NEW forensics students. A novice, therefore, must not have competed in more than one high school forensic meet (in any event) prior to this year. That means a student who “filled in” once last spring could still compete if you believe he is “new” at this. Please use good judgment in deciding which of your students are true beginners.

MASKING

In order to provide a safe competitive environment for students AND judges from all schools, we will adhere to the following protocol created in agreement with the southern Colorado coaches.

  1. Masks are required for everyone while inside with the exception of those actively giving a speech. The students may remove their masks for their presentation only.
  2. Students and judges will sit in the back of classrooms to provide for separation between the student presenting and the rest of the competitors/judges.
  3. For now, we will ask that there are not observers in the rooms. Depending how things go, this could change.
  4. Debate students will have their masks on except when speaking. During CX, students will stand at their desks so they are separated.
  5. Food will be individually packaged or will be served so that only one person is touching a serving utensil.
  6. Masks may be removed only while students/judges are actively eating or drinking; masks should be worn as much as possible, and we will encourage students and judges to socially distance while eating or sit outside when possible.

JUDGING

Schools should provide one experienced student judge for every two debate entries. One student judge should be provided for every five students entered in events. If possible, please bring extra judges. Coaches will be used to judge only if needed. Please remember to register student judges that you feel have the necessary background to provide positive and instructive criticism. IF YOUR PROGRAM IS NEW and you can’t bring any varsity students, please feel free to compete! We really want to support your efforts. Please do not register student judges on Speechwire as it could mess up their competition accounts for varsity season. We will be using paper ballots for this tournament, so we will register your student judges in the morning of the tournament as we did in the pre-COVID days. J

ROUNDS OF COMPETITION

Three rounds of competition will be guaranteed in all areas. No Finals!

RULES

CHSAA guidelines will be used in debate and events.

Coaches will receive their student’s exact code at registration as well as on speechwire.com. You will need to share these with your students.

DEBATE TOPICS:

Lincoln-Douglas: Resolved: The member nations of the World Trade Organization ought to reduce intellectual property protections for medicines.

Public Forum: Resolved: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization should substantially increase its defense commitments to the Baltic states.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Spencer
