Concord High School Debate Tournament

 

The Concord High School Forensics Team invites you to attend our 2021 “Return to Normal”  Fall Debate Tournament on Saturday, October 9th.  Please read the information below.  

 

Online registration is available on Speechwire and should be open now.  If you have any questions please email me at jeff.stutzman@gmail.com.  

 

PLEASE NOTE: We will be using online balloting this year, so you will need to enter your judges’ emails when you register. Judges will also need to create a Speechwire account.

 

Registration

8:30-9:00am (EDT)

Judge Meeting:  9:00am in Library.

First Round

9:15am (EDT) [WSD impromptu prep will start at 9:15am]

Awards

Approximately 4:00pm

Notes:

  • Policy, LD, PF, WSD, and Congress will be offered and will follow IHSFA rules.

  • Policy, LD, PF, and WSD will be power-matched rounds 3 & 4 as time allows.

Policy:

  • 2 divisions offered:  Varsity and Novice.  Novice is defined as a first year debater.  IHSFA rules apply.

  • To clarify, IHSFA rules limit Novices to specific Novice Case Areas:

    • Substantially strengthen federal surveillance and standards for lead in drinking water.
    • Substantially limit the use of hydraulic fracturing by energy companies in the United States.
    • Substantially strengthen federal standards for agriculture-related runoff into lakes and streams.
    • Substantially increase the protection of wetlands in the United States.
  • Reminder: Novice teams may NOT run topicality, counterplans, or kritiks.

  • Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States.

Lincoln-Douglas

  • Varsity and Novice offered.  

  • Both divisions will use the September/October topic. IHSFA Rules Apply.

  • Resolved: The member nations of the World Trade Organization ought to reduce intellectual property protections for medicines.

Public Forum:

  • Varsity and  Novice offered.

  • Both Divisions will use the September/November topic. 

  • Resolved: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization should substantially increase its defense commitments to the Baltic states.

World Schools Debate:

  • One Division will be offered.

  • Rounds 1 & 3 will be impromptu. Teams may use 2 Reference books for prep.

  • Round 2 Proposition: This House regrets the United States’ involvement in Afghanistan.

  • Round 4 Proposition:  This House prefers AI-generated voting districts to those created by legislative bodies.

Congress:

  • Varsity and Novice offered.  

  • NSDA September Docket legislation 1, 2, 5, and 8 (Official Docket uploaded in speechwire). 

  • Varsity will elect presiding officers from within the house with competitors voting for best P.O.  

  • Please email me directly if you have someone willing to PO a novice house.  

JUDGES:

  • Please bring one judge for every 4 debaters or fraction thereof (3 PF teams=2 judges). Congress=1 judge per 5 entries/fraction.

  • All judges should be ready to judge any event.

  • Varsity debaters with 250 NFL points+ may judge novice (PLEASE make sure to mark them as such on their registration.)

  • We will be using online balloting, so all judges will need to register on Speechwire prior to coming and bring a device.  Laptops or tablets are preferred over smartphones. A few computers will be available for use after each round.

 

 

COVID PROTOCOLS: In keeping with current COVID protocols, all competitors and judges are asked to follow these protocols:

  • Competitors and judges are required to stay masked when not competing.

  • Students may remove their masks during speech delivery and cross-examination.

  • If judges are socially distanced from debaters, then it is their discretion if they want to remove their mask during the debate.

  • When not competing, students/judges are asked to stay at their designated table in the cafeteria.

Awards: Applicable awards will be given. 

 

Registration: Final registration with names for all divisions are due by 7pm EDT Tuesday, October 5th.  Judges AND emails should be registered on speechwire by Thursday, October 7th.
