Judges

Judges will be assigned one or more rounds to judge.  Judges MUST provide a cell phone contact number on Speechwire and be available throughout the entire course of the tournament if any questions arise. We try to honor requests to judge events as reflected in the “Notes” section of judge accounts.  This is not always possible and judges should be prepared to judge all events in the entry category.  Judges will go to the password-protected Speechwire website, to access their e-ballots. The ballot will also provide space to write a reason for decision (RFD) explaining their ranks, as well as space to leave individual feedback for the competitors. This feedback is important to competitors.

Fees and Judging Obligation

The entry fee is $10 per student (a PF team is two students, so $20 per PF team). Schools are required to provide a certain number of TRAINED judges based on their entries in each of our four categories: Congress, Speech, Public Forum, and Lincoln Douglas. The specific judge requirements are explained below under “Judge Quotas.”

**NEW THIS YEAR** - We have changed our high school judge policy to allow any sophomore, junior, or senior with 250 NSDA points to judge.

Schools will be fined $25 for each missing judge and need to drop students to meet the quotas.

Judge Quotas

Congress - 1 judge for every 5 entries, or fraction thereof

Speech - 1 judge for every 5 entries, or fraction thereof

Public Forum - 1 judge for every 2 entries, or fraction thereof

Lincoln Douglas - 1 judge for every 2 entries, or fraction thereof

Speechwire.com

All events will use online ballots through Speechwire.com. Every judge is required to create a Speechwire.com account prior to the tournament registration deadline. Judges must be able to log in to live.speechwire.com to learn the passcode needed to learn their judging assignments, and complete their ballots. Including valid contact information in the Speechwire.com account is important so tournament staff can attempt to reach judges.  Review this information on setting up your school on Speechwire.com.  Students, judges, and coaches will have access to a series of webinars detailing using the platform and Speechwire.com to facilitate the tournament.

Technology Requirements

In order to compete or judge in this tournament, all students and judges must have internet access, a microphone, and a webcam. Further, it is the expectation of the tournament that all students and judges have their webcam on for the duration of the round with the exception of the initial entry into the tournament room. That said, judges will be instructed not to allow video/sound equipment quality, physical location, or other elements not in control of the individual students to affect their decisions. We understand that many students and judges do not have equal access to the internet and technology.

**NEW** - We have posted critical information about the NSDA Campus platform and the technology requirements below and under “Files for Download.” There is one document titled “Access Info for School IT Departments” that you should share with your school’s IT department. This will guide them on what, if any, changes are needed to support the virtual competition rooms on NSDA Campus. This is VERY IMPORTANT if you or your students are competing/judging from your school. Also, we are including YouTube videos on how to use NSDA Campus for students and judges.

No Show Policy

We appreciate the voluntary time that our judges devote to help our tournaments run smoothly. If any competitors do not appear in the virtual rooms within twenty minutes of the round starting, that student will be marked as a no-show and drop fees will be added to the student’s school account.

Participant Privacy

Speechwire.com and NSDA Campus are the platforms that will be used to conduct competition rounds.  Any unauthorized sharing of a competitor’s photo, video or creative property by any competitor or judge will result in disqualification of the judge or competitor’s school from the tournament.  We will not be recording any rounds through Speechwire or NSDA Campus, and the independent recording of rounds by judges or students is strictly prohibited. Any violation of this rule will result in disqualification from the tournament without return of fees and possible disqualification from future tournaments.
