Dear colleagues,

It’s my pleasure to invite you and your middle school/junior high speech team/clubs to the 7th annual Norfolk Junior High Speech Invitational on Friday, April 23rd. This contest is open to all students in 6th-8th grade.

Please consider attending this FULLY REMOTE tournament through ZOOM and SPEECHWIRE. I will send more information about how our virtual tournament will work prior to the week of the tournament. It should not be difficult for students or judges. The most important item right now to be aware of is that YOUR STUDENTS MUST HAVE A SPEECHWIRE ACCOUNT, AND A COACH HAS TO CREATE THAT ACCOUNT, BUT THAT IS THE ONLY SET UP YOU NEED TO DO AS A COACH. We will take it from there!

Events Offered: All students may double enter, no triple entries are allowed. Poetry, Humorous Prose, Serious Prose, Declamation, Persuasive, Informative/Entertainment, Impromptu, Extemp, Duet Acting, and OID.
Time Limits: Poetry, Persuasive, Informative/Entertainment, Declamation is 8 min max. Humorous Prose, Serious Prose, Duet is 10 min max. OID is 15 min max. EXT max is 5 min and IMP max is 4 min.

Extemp Prep: We will be allowing computers in extemp prep per the high school NSAA rules. Obviously we cannot monitor internet use in a remote tournament - so it is open internet access. And they MUST have their cameras ON in the prep room.

Format: We will be hosting three preliminary rounds of competition and then awards. There will not be a finals round.

Awards: This year, we are giving medals out for 1st through 6th place in all events. There will also be an award for the top scoring school. These will be mailed out after the tournament.

Judging: We ask that you bring one judge for every FIVE entries (5 entries you owe one judge, 6 entries you owe two). Judges may be qualified varsity members from high school teams, but please make sure you train them on how to judge every event, and please stress the importance of lots of positive feedback and constructive criticism. Many high school coaches would be happy to help you fill judging requirements with their students. Coaches are always welcome to judge. You are welcome to bring extra judges if you have any. Norfolk High School competitors will also judge.

Fees: Entries at $5.00 per entry and judge fees are $10.00 per uncovered entry/slot (you pay per uncovered, individual entry). **We also added a $15 team fee this year to help cover the cost of awards and mailing awards. Thank you for understanding that this fee just helps us cover basic costs. Make checks out to Norfolk Junior High School.

Entry Deadlines: Registration will close at 5:00 pm on Tuesday April 20th. Entries will only be accepted using Speechwire.

We are very excited to host you and your students! If you have any questions, please email Heather Whitney at heatherwhitney@npsne.org.

We look forward to seeing you in April!

Sincerely,

Heather Whitney
