The New Jersey Speech & Debate League (NJSDL) and Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart will host an asynchronous online March Middle School tournament open to all students in Grades 5 to 8. This tournament is open and not limited to schools in New Jersey.

Registration, video links, and judges are due on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 7:00 PM via the SpeechWire Website. Please post links to unlisted YouTube videos for each student in SpeechWire by this time.  All entries without videos will be dropped at this time.

Preliminary rounds will be judged asynchronously between Tuesday, March 30 and Thursday April 1, 2021. Elimination Rounds will be judged on Friday, April 2, 2021.

The following events will be offered:

  • Declamation
  • Original Oratory / Public Speaking (Persuasive or Informative)
  • Memorized Interp (Dramatic or Humorous)
  • Poetry Reading
  • Pro-Con Challenge *
  • Prose Reading

For all events we will use the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) Middle School rules. However, for typically memorized events, we will not disqualify any students who are not memorized. Judges will be instructed to take memorization into consideration when evaluating rounds and assigning ranks but we want to encourage participation.

* For the Pro-Con Challenge, students can choose any of the NSDA topics from this academic year in Policy Debate, Public Forum Debate, or Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Students will submit ONE video containing both their Pro (Affirmative) speech and their Con (Negative) speech on a single NSDA topic. The video containing both the Pro and Con speech should not exceed 10 minutes and 30 seconds.

Checks for entry fees and judge fees should be made payable to NJSDL. Checks can be sent to:
