Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The coaches and students at Illinois State University are pleased to invite you to attend the Last Chance tournament on Sunday March 14, 2020 (for our District V friends, this is the day AFTER our District tournament).

We are excited to be offering all 11 AFA / NFA events (and YES this does fall on AFA's qualification deadline, so it counts for legs!).    We will have novice sections in any NFA event that has at least 9 varsity and 5 novice entries.  Rounds will be synchronous on Zoom, and the dress code is "come as you are."

Last year this was our last bit of Normal before everything closed - we're not truly "back" yet, but we hope you'll join us for some fun and last minute qualifications as we all make this final push toward nationals!

Sincerely,

Rocky Roque & Isa Scaturro

RULES OF EVENTS

GENERAL:   All programs and speeches must not have been used by a student in any competition (high school or college) prior to September 1, 2020.  Novice divisions will be offered in events that have at least 9 varsity and 5 novice entries.  A novice is a student who has no intercollegiate forensics experience prior to September 1, 2020.  Competitors must be undergraduates working on their first degree.  We will be following the rules and ethical standards of the National Forensics Association. For event descriptions or clarification of rules, please visit: https://sites.google.com/site/nationalforensicsassociation/about-nfa/governing-documents

ENTRIES:  Each student may enter a maximum of six events.  Flights will be arranged to minimize cross entry, while best using rooms and judges.  There is no limit on the amount of entries a school may enter per event; however, for schools with larger entries we may have to artificially move competitors to utilize judges from that school.

The deadline for receiving entries is 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 9th.  Drops will be accepted after the deadline without penalty until noon Wednesday, March 10th.   Changes based on tournament performance on Saturday March 13th will be allowed; we just ask that they are reported Saturday night.

Entries should be posted to Speechwire

JUDGES & FEES:  Entry fees are FREE - normally we charge to pay for food and supplies, but since we are online, it's free!.  Drops will be accepted free of charge until noon on Wednesday, March 10th.  After March 10th drop fees will be charged - $5 per dropped slot until 9 am March 14th when the price goes up to $15 per slot.  Please remain in communication with the tournament if you have a student who might need to drop.

Each school should furnish one judge for every six slots.  Hired judges are available at $10.00 per uncovered slot (hired judges will be paid $10.00 per round).  We will gladly pay any clean judges a school can provide beyond their obligation to ensure better ballots for your students.  Judges dropped after the Wednesday, March 10 @ 12:00 p.m. deadline will result in a nuisance fee of $15.00 each plus the additional cost of hiring a judge.  Judges dropped at registration will result in a $25.00 nuisance fee plus the additional cost of hiring a judge (all nuisance fees are paid directly to judges who are hired at the last minute to help sweeten the pot).  ALL fees are assessed as of 5pm Tuesday March 9th.

Checks should be made payable to ISU Forensics and mailed to us at Campus Box 4480 Normal IL 61790.  If you prefer to pay online with a credit card, just let us know and we will send a link!

AWARDS:  To keep costs down, we will not be giving out trophies for finalists.  Your qualification will be your award!

ATTIRE:  This is a "come as you are" tournament - no need for suits!

MODALITY:  This is a synchronous tournament on Zoom.  Please make sure you are logged in to a valid Zoom account and have pushed through all the recent updates!

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE – SUNDAY, MARCH 14, 2021 - posted on Speechwire;   This schedule will DEFINITELY CHANGE TO ACCOMMODATE ENTRIES AND JUDGES.  Our goal is to make the day as short and efficient as possible, so please make sure you check Speechwire for day-of adjustments!
