The 2021 Cider Frostbite Tournament

Dear Colleagues,

Jackrabbit Forensics at South Dakota State University invites you to the 2021 Cider Frostbite Tournament hosted Tuesday, March 2nd-Friday March 5th, asynchronously hosted through SpeechWire.

This is a fabulous opportunity to compete before the AFA-NST Joel Hefling District IV Qualifying Tournament being held on Saturday, March 6th synchronously. For those interested in the history of this tournament, “Cider Frostbite” is an anagram for “before district”.

The 2021 Cider Frostbite Tournament will offer two preliminary rounds in one division of all AFA-NST events. We may condense to 1 round with 3 judges or place an additional judge in the second preliminary round (per Section V, G of the AFA-NST bylaws).

We are pleased to tell you that there will be no fee per entry. The cost per uncovered judge is $15.00. One judge covers 8 entries. Judges must be available the entire tournament. Additional fees may apply if judges have restrictions against events or other teams/competitors. Entries are due along with an unlisted YouTube link via SpeechWire at 8:00pm on Monday, March 1st. Fees will be assessed as the entry stands at 8:00pm on Monday, March 1st. A fee of $10.00 will be assessed for each student drop after this time, and $50.00 for every judge dropped from the tournament.  Payment may be made by check made out to Pi Kappa Delta ℅ Andrea Carlile, South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD, 57007.

Content warnings, when appropriate, are encouraged. Videos are to be newly recorded for use at this tournament. The competitor may have no more than one other person in the room to help record, and no audience members. Competitors may use one mic and one speaker. Duo partners must be in separate rooms. Please do not edit the quality of videos for decorative purposes.

Special Cases

2021 AFA-NST Bylaws will guide decisions pertaining to special cases, as needed.

Team judges are expected to be available for all rounds. The tournament staff reserves the right to “double up” speakers from a school in preliminary rounds in order to keep the judging pool clean and productive, although we will try to avoid this. The hired judge pool will consist primarily of SDSU faculty, graduate students and community members. A judge training session will be held to ensure an understanding of events, rules and effective ballot writing. It is the responsibility of participating schools to ensure their judges have access to a reliable computer or tablet and internet connection.

PDF Certificates and social media shout-outs will be awarded to finalists in each event and the top three teams will receive recognition and a social media shout, as well.
