Greetings! Coaches Jason Newhouser and Kyle Etherington cordially invite you to participate in the Rossville Stinger Speech Tournament (we're gonna go synchronous, baby!) on Saturday, February 13, 2021!

Registration will only be accepted via SpeechWire. The deadline for registration is 6PM on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. You will still be able to drop and make changes to your entries after the deadline; however, no new entries will be permitted.

Our tournament will offer Broadcasting, Discussion, IX, USX, Impromptu, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, Original Performance, Poetry, Prose, Program of Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, and the infamously fake event: Improvisational Duo.

All events will run synchronously via NSDA Campus with Zoom running as a back-up.

Specific event information is as follows:

  • BROADCASTING: Preliminary rounds will be the News Program and the final round will be a 2-min prep/2-min perform on-the-spot. Program information will be made available through the FILES FOR DOWNLOAD link on SpeechWire on or before 6:00PM on Monday, February 8, 2021.
  • DISCUSSION: Each 30-minute round will be run as a Socratic Seminar featuring a different text for discussion. Texts will be made available through the FILES FOR DOWNLOAD link on SpeechWire on or before 6:00PM on Monday, February 8, 2021.
  • EXTEMP: Extemp will draw prior to the first round and will use the same topic for Rounds 1 through 3. Finalists will draw a new topic. If there are a small number of entries in the two extemp events, the events may be combined for more competition.
  • IMPROV DUO: Teams will be given a prompt and a TOTAL of FIVE MINUTES to prepare AND perform (i.e. 1-min prep, 4-min performance; 2-min prep, 3-min performance; etc.). Skits may include interaction between team members, including eye and physical contact. Props, however, may not be used. Improv Duo is referred to as a "fake" event above purely because it is just for fun. Please, have fun with this event!
Contestants may triple in ALL events. There will be special recognition for the triple-entered student who scores the best in their events. Contestants double and triple at their own risk! If a contestant is late (after the start time for the next round) to a second or third event - no matter the reason, even if not at the fault of the contestant - the contestant will be marked last in that round. Coaches, please explain this to your contestants and judges. Again, CONTESTANTS DOUBLE AND TRIPLE AT THEIR OWN RISK!

Tournament Structure:

7:30AM: Check-In Begins
8:30AM: Extemp Prep
9AM: Round 1 (All Events, EXCEPT DISCUSSION)
10AM: Round 1 (Discussion)
11AM: Round 2 (All Events, EXCEPT DISCUSSION)
12PM: Round 2 (Discussion)
1PM: Round 3 (All Events, EXCEPT DISCUSSION)
2PM: Round 3 (Discussion)
3PM: Next-in/Final Rounds
5PM: Finalist Recognition

While there are no caps on the number of entries, only the first four you've entered in an event will be eligible for sweeps points. So, if you have six kids who REALLY want to do Discussion, the first four you enter will be eligible for sweeps, but entries 5 and 6 from your team will be ineligible for sweeps. If you have questions about this, please let me know! (These non-sweeps kids will still be ranked and earn individual recognition, but their achievement will not count toward team sweeps).

Teams are responsible for providing one judge for every five entries (or fraction thereof; 5 entries = 1 judge, 6 entries = 2 judges, etc.). Teams that do not provide their required number of judges will be ineligible for team sweepstakes points.

Since we generally raise funds through our staged performances throughout the year and from the selling of concessions, we will charge a nominal fee of $1 per student to participate in this tournament. The money we collect from registration will not even cover SpeechWire or NSDA Campus. We simply do not have the reserves to run a tournament for free and sincerely appreciate your nominal registration fee!

We will recognize finalists at an online ceremony, but we will not be shipping ribbons or trophies. After prelims, the Top 5 in each event will go to a final and ranks 6-10 will go to a Next-in Final. We will recognize and award sweeps points for the Top 10 in each event.

Shamelessly Stolen Information from Paul Kennedy as It Relates to Running a Successful Online Synchronous Tournament:

You will need to make sure all of your students have active speechwire.com accounts linked to your program. Please make sure to add your judges’ emails to the SpeechWire system. There are multiple helpful videos posted to speechwire.com that can help train your judges and competitors for how an online tournament will function.

If you intend to have students competing over your school WiFi, it is absolutely critical that they test NSDA Campus over the network in advance. Your IT department will need to whitelist jitsi.org in order to make this happen. The key issues seem to come up with using Campus through Speechwire over school networks, so make sure you are testing through that configuration. We will use Zoom as a backup plan throughout the day for any rounds with significant tech issues, flowing through a designated tournament Zoom account.

Please use our tournament specific email - rossville.speech@gmail.com - for any questions or tournament related issues.

I'm really excited to host this tournament! While I hosted a small hybrid tournament back in December, this is my first time attempting to host a fully-synchronous tournament! Problems WILL happen! I ask for your kindness and grace in advance and assure you that I will do everything in my power to make this as fun and successful for your kids as humanly possible!

If you have any questions, please contact me! Thanks and we'll "see" you soon!
