Upstate Eight Conference 2020-21
General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Illinois. View manager contact information
Hello you fantastic Upstate Eight coaches!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Upstate Eight Conference Championship hosted asynchronously on Saturday, January 30th, 2021.
The tournament is live on SpeechWire. Please make sure your competitors and judges are entered by Monday at 7pm. You are limited to two entries per event. No competitor may be triple-entered. All submissions of speech videos must be made by 7pm on Wednesday 1/27. From there, the judges will be forwarded the videos to assess and we will have the list of finalists by Friday night, to be posted Saturday morning at 9am. At this point, judges will receive their final round videos and will judge asynchronously.
All schools are required to provide three judges. (If you have more available, please let me know.) Judging by precedent, it seems important to note that your three judges must be paid by your school. If I am missing any details about judges, I am very happy to be corrected and will communicate with my AD accordingly.
Live Awards Ceremony Friday, Jan. 29, 7:30pm
Your judges MUST be “clean.” I am politely asking that any Speech alums you bring to judge are at least two Speech seasons removed from high school competition. Additionally, the judges you bring will most likely be judging your own kids.
In lieu of an award ceremony, we will simply post the final results to SpeechWire. In an attempt to give as many kids as much feedback as possible, finals will be triple-judged.
Limited Prep:
Prelim prompts for EXT and IMP and the prelim Radio packet will be sent out on Tuesday morning (7am).
Duets:
As we’ll be getting close to the state series at that point, duets will count as part of team sweeps
Triple-Entering:
Since this is conference, no competitor may triple-enter.
Tab/Help Desk
Despite the asynchronous nature of this tournament, our Zoom help desk/tab will be open throughout the day if you or a judge runs into any issue, if you want to check how your kids are doing, or if you just want to pop in to say hello and offer any friendly words of advice, assurances, or harsh derision.
Awards:
Final results will be posted to SpeechWire by 11:30am (hopefully we can get them posted even sooner).
Finalists will receive medals and next-ins will receive ribbons to be mailed to their schools.
The Unknowns
If 2020 taught us anything (other than the fact that sweatpants CAN be proper work attire if people only see you from the sternum up), it is that unknowns are a given. I have known the Speech community to be full of kind, collegial, and generous souls, so I’m sure I don’t have to ask for your patience and understanding as I fumble my way through this, but it would certainly be appreciated. Also, if anyone who has run digital tournaments this year is comfortable chiming in with advice to head off any problems before they arise, it would be greatly appreciated. A link to the tab room will be sent out the morning of the tournament.
Sincerely,
