Drakes Speech Challenge
General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Minnesota. View manager contact information Welcome to the 2021 Drakes Speech Challenge "VIRTUAL" Speech Tournament Saturday, March 20, 2021.
Due to pandemic restrictions, this year's meet will be a hybrid, virtual competition using the NSDA Campus tournament platform in coordination with SpeechWire.com.
FORMAT: Three preliminary rounds of speaking in all 13 MSHSL-endorsed categories with a final round in each.
TIMETABLE: Final check-in with drops and adds by 7:30 a.m. please! Draws will begin at 8:30, followed by Round One at 9:00 for most events: please note that with our change in the tournament's double-entry policy (allowed in any category), discussion rounds will begin 15 minutes into each timeframe. Final round is scheduled for 1:30 PM with awards to follow shortly thereafter.
AWARDS: All speakers who break into finals will receive a blue ribbon and medals will be presented to the three six speakers in each category; Blue ribbons will also be presented to speakers who tied with any speaker who made finals on rank. "Honorable Mention" ribbons, to other highly-ranked speakers; the top 3 teams + first place small team (8 or fewer entries) will receive a $50 award to be presented to a worthy non-profit of the winning team’s choice. Awards will be sent via mail to each team.
JUDGES: Please furnish one qualified judge for every six entries (1:6) or fraction thereof. It is unlikely that extra judges will be available. THE NUMBER OF JUDGES REGISTERED CANNOT BE DECREASED AFTER THE MARCH 18 REGISTRATION DEADLINE. You will be assessed an $80 fee for missing judges. (Each duo interp pair should be counted as a single entry in calculating the number of judges required.)
ENTRY FEE: $7.00 per entry, along with a $20 per team charge (payable to Blackduck High School Speech Boosters).
*DOUBLE ENTRY: Speakers may double enter in any category with the following exception: a speaker cannot double enter in Discussion and a Draw event; speakers cannot double in two Draw events. To help accommodate this, discussion rounds will begin 15 minutes later than the posted start time for the round. Suffice to say, any speaker who doubles must manage their time parameters responsibly and with utmost courtesy to the judges and other speakers.
DROP/ADD: We acknowledge the drop/add inevitability and urge you to make changes on SpeechWire.com up until your final "check-in" prior to 7:30 AM Saturday morning, at which time Speechwire registration will be closed; if, however, you have further drop/adds and no access to SpeechWire.com, please TEXT to 218-368-4876 BEFORE 8:00 AM in order to leave a clearly-detailed text message, including school, category, and name of speaker(s) to drop or add.
DEADLINE: Registration via Speechwire.com must be received by Noon, Thursday, March 18th, 2021. This date also serves as the invoicing deadline for the tournament. Teams are obligated to pay for the number of speakers and to provide the required number of judges registered at the time of this deadline, despite amendments to your roster later. COMMUNICATION: During the week prior to the contest, a list of links will be sent to each coach, who will then share the information with the participants. Please direct your correspondence, queries, or payments to Jennifer Parker via one of these venues:
