2021 Iowa Swing Invitation
 
Greetings!
 
Simpson College and the University of Northern Iowa look forward to hosting you at the Virtual Iowa Swing! Simpson will host the Storm Invitational to be completed Saturday, January 16. UNI will host the Bill Henderson Invitational to be completed January 17. Both tournaments will be held asynchronously.
 
The Iowa Swing offers competition in all 11 AFA events on both days. Entries and video links for both days must be submitted on Speechwire by Sunday, January 10, at 5 p.m. Direct questions about the overall swing tournament to sabarfield@gmail.com and the Simpson half of the tournament to deano.pape@simpson.edu

2021 IOWA SWING TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
 
Tournament Fees
 
$5/entry. One quality judge covers six slots. There is a $10.00 fee for every uncovered entry.

ENTRIES: Entries must be submitted to Speechwire on Sunday, January 10 by 5 p.m. CST. After the deadline, no additional entries will be accepted. If drops need to be made after the deadline, email sabarfield@gmail.com (UNI half) or deano.pape@simpson.edu (Simpson half).
 
EVENTS: All 11 AFA events will be offered, and events will be divided into 2 patterns. IE Students may enter up to three events in each pattern:

Saturday January 9 12pm CST - Extemp and Impromptu prompts emailed to all coaches registering for the tournament 
 
Sunday January 10 5pm CST - Entries and corresponding videos due to Speechwire
 
Monday January 11 30 9am CST - Preliminary round ballots for The Simpson Storm are released via Speechwire
 
Wednesday January 13 9am CST - The preliminary round ballots for the Bill Henderson Invitational
 
Wednesday January 13 5pm CST - Preliminary ballot rankings for the Simpson Storm DUE
 
Wednesday January 13 8pm CST – Finals postings and Ballots for the Simpson Storm released.
 
Friday January 15 5pm CST - Finals ballots for the Simpson Storm DUE

REGISTRATION
 
Please register for the tournament and submit video links via SpeechWire by SUNDAY January 10 5pm CST. Students may enter up to 5 events TOTAL. Students may enter two duos (with different partners) but this will count as two events.
 
There are no limits on the number of entries a team can enter in any event, but teams entering large numbers in certain events may anticipate “competing” against teammates in preliminary rounds.
 
Please denote your novices when registering. We will recognize the top novice in each category at awards. Novices are defined as anyone in their first year of collegiate competition.
 
VIRTUAL TOURNAMENT RULES MODIFICATIONS
Rule modifications for the tournament will follow recommendations made by the AFA-NST
 
All videos shall not have been submitted in an interscholastic competition prior to January 1, 2021. Materials should not have been used in competitions prior to September 1, 2020. It should be noted high school students or first year collegiate speech students are not permitted to reuse literature from high school.
There shall be no in-person audiences
Duo partners must perform from separate rooms
Tapings shall be single camera with a singular mic
Editing shall only be used for the purpose of adding visual aid(s)
 
Unique Video Submission
 
We will ask that each video performance has not been/is not entered into another asynchronous tournament on a different weekend. You can use the same submission for both halves of this tournament. Video submission links must be hosted via YouTube. Videos need to be set to “unlisted” for the tournament.
 
Content Warnings
 
If a student’s performance includes sensitive topic areas they anticipate may be triggering for audience members or judges, we ask you to enter those topics into the content warning space on Speechwire at the time you submit your entries.
 
Limited Preparation
 
Prompts will be released at 12:00pm Central time on Saturday January 9, 2020, and video links are due by registration close on the 29th. Extemp prep DOES NOT need to be included in the recording. You DO need to include the prep time for impromptu speeches.
 
EXTEMP
Questions will cover the traditional areas of the economy, international politics and domestic politics.
 
IMPROMPTU
Quotations will be used in each round. 
 
Awards
 
INDIVIDUAL SWEEPS: Students entered in at least four individual events will be eligible for an Individual Sweepstakes award.
 
AWARDS: The top 6 contestants in each event will advance to finals and receive awards, unless there are fewer than 12 entries in the event (or /e-breaking constraints require a different number of finalists). The top 3 individual sweeps entries will receive awards based on points from prelims and finals. Individual Events Sweepstakes will be awarded to the top 3 teams on each day of completion. Combined sweepstakes will be awarded to the top 3 individual events teams at the conclusion of both tournaments. There will be top novice awards in each event.
