WHSFA LogoThis is where coaches will confirm/re-register entries and adjudicators for the State Speech Festival. Registration opens Tue., Mar. 30.

Please consult the most current 2021 edition of the WHSFA Speech Handbook for specific instructions pertaining to how registration works (p. 13). For more detailed information and FAQs, please consult the WHSFA Speech Contests page.

How State Will Work

  • Entries in Group Interpretive Reading and Play Acting must submit a prerecorded video to be adjudicated asynchronously.
  • Entries in all other categories may participate:
    • Asynchronously by submitting a prerecorded video, or one of three live (synchronous) time slots (4pm, Friday 4/16; 7pm, Friday 4/16; or 10am, Saturday 4/17).
    • For schools participating live/synchronously, a majority of its entries should present during the time slot in which the school was preregistered, though individual entries may be registered to present during other time slots, provided the school meets its obligation for adjudicators for each time slot in which it has entries.
  • Adjudication obligations are for each time slot (asynchronous and/or live) in which the school has entries, as per the following ratios:
    • 1-8 entries = 1 adjudicator
    • 9-19 entries = 2 adjudicators
    • 20+ entries = 3 adjudicators
  • Adjudication obligations may not be split between multiple time slots; e.g., if a school has 10 asynchronous entries, 2  entries participating in the Friday 7pm slot, and 1 entry participating in the Saturday 10am slot, it must provide 2 asynchronous adjudicators plus 1 to adjudicate Friday at 7pm, and 1 to adjudicate Saturday at 10am, for a total of 4 adjudicator commitments. SpeechWire will allow a school to list the same adjudicator in multiple time slot options, but they can only be used once per time slot. For a single adjudicator to commit to more than one asynchronous section commitment, complete this form. The State Office will audit adjudicators listed for live rounds; a single adjudicator may not commit to more than one school for live rounds.
  • Each uncovered adjudicator commitment will be assessed a $200 fee. This is steep, deliberately, as an incentive for schools to simply provide adjudicators, and since the ratio is much higher than usual contests. If necessary, coaches are encouraged to utilize the WHSFA Adjudicator Email list to recruit and hire certified adjudicators, but should ensure whomever they hire will not be double-booked in any live/synchronous round on April 16-17.
  • 2021 T-Shirt DesignEntry fees are $10/individual entry, $12/two-person Demonstration entry, $15/Group Interp or Play Acting entry.
  • Storytelling topic should be chosen by the student, who should announce which topic they are performing immediately before presenting (either on video or live).
  • Schools participating in live rounds should check with school IT/technology staff to double-check instructions for using NSDA Campus and Jitsi/8x8 videoconferencing. After March 30, coaches can test the platform by using the "Squad room" on the Registration page in SpeechWire, and students can test it at https://live.speechwire.com.
  • T-Shirts can be ordered directly from Custom Ink by coaches, parents/students. The State Office is not handling T-shirt orders this year.
