The 28th Annual Dolores Korfhage Hilke Memorial Speech Invitational

Thanks to the generosity of the family of the late Dolores Korfhage Hilke, a former South St. Paul speech great, South St. Paul is again extending this invitation to our tournament, which will be held March 13.  Our goal is to provide a congenial, rewarding, competitive experience to you and your students.  Please note that we offer both impromptu and POI as well as the 13 MSHSL events.

EGISTRATION: We are again using www.speechwire.com for registration and scheduling. With a virtual tournament we don't need to worry about school capacity, but please register no later than Tuesday, March 9, at 4:00 p.m. Drops made before 4 pm Thursday will not count towards any registration fee owed.  Drops after that will not change your registration fee NOR your judging obligations.  The exception to that rule will be for those teams who have students also competing in the NSDA qualifying tournament this weekend.  A school will NOT owe a registration fee for a student that drops from Hilke because they advanced to Semis/Finals of the NSDA Qualifier.  If that changes the school's judging obligation, that is fine, as well.  If you have students in that situation, I would appreciate a quick email letting me know when YOU find out said situation.

I will keep the Speechwire registration open until the time registration closes on Saturday morning, March 13, so that all teams can make adjustments as needed.

ENTRY LIMITS:  Since our goal is to provide a rewarding tournament for small and mid-size teams, registration is limited to no more than 56 entries per team for the 13 MSHSL events + Impromptu and POI.  If you have more than 56 entries, you can divide your team in two and enter the remaining students with another team name.  For example, instead of South St Paul, I could enter my remaining team members as Packers.  We will allow double entries.  Also, we will again offer students the opportunity to try a 14th category, IMPROMPTU. Please check the General Information section for details on this fun event.  Entries in Impromptu DO NOT COUNT against the team entry limit, but those entries DO count toward your school's judge requirement and entry fee!  PLEASE NOTE:  Discussion rounds will start ten minutes AFTER the other events, to allow discussants to double-enter.  We strongly discourage triple entries, and ONLY students who normally double-enter and ALSO wish to compete in Impromptu may consider doing so.  Any student attempting to triple-enter assumes all responsibility to make it work.

IMPROMPTU: All schools registering students in impromptu are encouraged to check out the details under General Information and some sample topics from past years. The material is there specifically to provide students a chance to practice this fun event prior to the competition.

FEE: $6.50 per student per event.  Each duo event counts as one student for purposes of assessing fees and judging obligations.  Your fees are based on your registration as of 4 p.m., March 9.  There will be no fee adjustment for drops or adjustment of judge obligations after 4 pm on March 11. The exception to that rule will be for those teams who have students also competing in the NSDA qualifying tournament the same weekend.

JUDGES: Bring one judge for each six competitors or fraction thereof.  Because our goal is to provide a quality experience for both competitors and judges, we work hard to keep sections, as much as possible, to six and at most seven contestants. Keeping sections small will be especially important now that we are adding a final round. Therefore, please understand that your judge obligation is based on your registration numbers at 4 p.m. March 11 and will NOT be affected by drops after that point, except as otherwise noted for teams that have students advancing to the semi-final/final rounds of the NSDA qualifier.

AWARDS: This year, because of the virtual nature of our competition, only first place trophies will be awarded to those who win the final round, though it make take me a few days to deliver said trophies to the schools.  All others advancing to the final round or to the next-in final will receive certificates.  Team trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place schools in both large-entry and small-entry divisions; again, it may take me a few days to get them delivered!

SCHEDULE:  Registration is from 7:00-8:00.  It is essential that your team be registered by 8:00.  Once we begin computer scheduling, it is a mess to add teams or students to the first round. Speechwire makes this so much easier for all of us.  I will keep the team registration open for you on the website, so that you may adjust your registration, as needed, once your team has checked in with you on the morning of.  We would appreciate a text or phone call indicating that you HAVE UPDATED your registration on-line OR giving us any drops/adds if you were unable to do so. The cell number to contact is 651-900-3797.

REGISTRATION: We are again using www.speechwire.com for registration and scheduling. Our school can accommodate approximately 600-650 competitors—so please register by 4 p.m. Monday, March 2.  After that date we will accommodate registrations only as space permits.  You may continue to make adds and drops through 8 a.m. on the morning of the competition, but please note that drops after Thursday, March 5 at 4 pm will be included in your registration fees.

ENTRY LIMITS:   Since our goal is to provide a rewarding tournament for small and mid-size teams, registration is limited to no more than 56 entries per team for the 13 MSHSL events, plus POI.  If you have more than 56 entries, you may enter two separate teams; your regular team and perhaps another smaller team with the name of your school mascot.  We will allow double entries.  Also, we will again offer students the opportunity to try an additional category, IMPROMPTU. Please check the General Information section for details on this fun event.  Entries in Impromptu do not count against the team entry limit!  Triple entries are strongly discouraged and ONLY permitted if one of the events is Impromptu.  The responsibility is on the student to make such a crazy schedule work.

IMPROMPTU: All schools registering students in impromptu are encouraged to check out the details under General Information and some sample topics from past years. The material is there specifically to provide students a chance to practice this new and fun event prior to the competition.

DISCUSSION: We will use part 2 of the outline, Global Wellness Through an International Lens

EXTEMP RDG and STORYTELLING:  We will use selections from the entire lists.

FEE: $6.50 per student.  Each duo event counts as one student for purposes of assessing fees and judging obligations.  Your fees are based on your registration as of 4 p.m. Thursday, March 11.  There will be no refunds for drops after that time, except as otherwise noted in the invitation for students advancing to the NSDA semifinal rounds;  Please mail checks to South St Paul High School, attn: Ceil McDonald, 700 N 2nd St., South St Paul, MN 55075.

JUDGES: Bring one judge for each six competitors or fraction thereof.  Because our goal is to provide a quality experience for both competitors and judges, we work hard to keep sections, as much as possible, to six and at most seven contestants. Small sections are especially important now that we have lengthened the time limits for most events. Therefore, please understand that your judge obligation is based on your March 11 registration and will NOT be affected by drops made after 4 pm Thursday, except for teams whose registration is affected when students at the NSDA qualifying tournament advance to the semi-final round.

AWARDS: Trophies will be awarded to the 1st place winner of each event.  Other placements will receive a certificate. Team trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place schools in both large- and small-entries.

SCHEDULE:  Registration is from 7:00-8:00.  Your speechwire registration will be open until 8:00 a.m.  It is essential that your team's registration be verified by that time. Please confirm that you have done so once by contacting us via my cell phone, 651-900-3797.  Also contact us If you experience a technical glitch when updating your registration.

Note that the staggered schedule allows any competitor, regardless of event, to compete in Impromptu, even students in Discussion!
